Aquaman Patch

sg
One of the items I picked up at the Big Apple Con was this nifty Aquaman patch, using one of Jose Luis Garcia Lopez's classic poses, with the added touch of the logo--nice!

It measures about 4x4", and was only eight bucks--probably a lot of money for just a patch (especially one I'll never actually attach to anything), but you so rarely see Aquaman on these things I didn't hesitate to pick it up once I saw it.

Aquaman Patch

sg
A while back, I ran a subscription flyer for a company that was producing a series of DC Superhero patches, one of them being of Aquaman.

Since you had to subscribe to the whole series, I passed up the offer, not wanting to spend all that money just to get one measly Aquaman patch.

Luckily for the rest of us, some members of
F.O.A.M. were a little more patch-centric--Vince Bartilucci sent me these two giant scans (click to see readable versions), showing the entire package he received with the Aquaman patch.

Looking over this stuff, I have to say I'm impressed how much they put into it--the graphic design, the use of stock art, the "fun facts"--make for a nice presentation, to say nothing of the patch itself (drawn by Eduardo Baretto). All in all, pretty well done.

Thanks Vince!

Patch Subscription Ad - 2008

Two weeks ago, I wrote a post about a 1970s DC Superhero Patch Ad, and I said at the time: "Patches were a real 70s and early-80s phenomenon; nowadays you don't see too many of them around, outside of bikers and people wearing the same jacket they had in 1974, which they attached patches like this to."

Well, I was more wrong than a blindfolded Dick Cheney, because a day later or so I got sent this by
F.O.A.M. member John Lijewksi III:

Now this is an odd offer!

Apparently via a company called Willabee & Ward, you can "subscribe" to a series of DC superhero patches, featuring stock art we've all come to know and love.

John told me he was interested in this to get the Aquaman patch (drawn by Eduardo Baretto). But it costs $20 a month for 2 patches, which he thought was too pricey just to get the Aquaman one.

I agree, that's a lot to spend for one measly patch, and then finding yourself stuck with the rest of them. Wait a few months and we'll probably see the Aquaman one show up on eBay.

So, even though he didn't get the patch, John sent me scans of the multi-page ad for them. Cool, thanks John!

Patch Ad - 1974

sg
This ad ran in what seemed like every DC comic of the early to mid-70s, the Aquaman patch being, to my eyes, the most visually compelling of all of them.

Patches were a real 70s and early-80s phenomenon; nowadays you don't see too many of them around, outside of bikers and people wearing the same jacket they had in 1974, which they attached patches like this to.

Fun Fact: As you can see, the Batman TV show had done its job; only Bat-Villains were considered popular enough to earn their own patches, even half a decade later after the show went off the air. No Brainiac patches for you!
