Justice League of America Annual #2 - 1983. Cover art by Chuck Patton and Dick Giordano.
With a new era for the Justice League of America just a few hours away, I thought today would be the perfect time to run this cover for our JLA Flashback installment, when Aquaman took the team into a whole new direction!
I had no idea this was coming, when I picked the book up off the stands in 1983. I was certainly thrilled to see Aquaman so prominently featured, both on the cover and inside the book. Of course, the bright future promised on this cover was not to be, but let's not dwell on the negatives!

JLA Flashback #11
Justice League of America #177 - Apr. 1980. Cover art by Rich Buckler and Dick Giordano.
Justice League of America didn't do many triptych covers, so Aquaman getting a little spot all his own is extra nice! Thanks Rich Buckler!

JLA Flashback #10
Justice League of America #142 - May 1977. Cover art by Rich Buckler and Jack Abel.
One of Aquaman's finest moments in the JLA, courtesy writer Steve Englehart: a whole issue almost exclusively starring the Sea King, the Atom, and the Elongated Man, dealing head-on with the topic of "B"-level superheroes!

JLA Flashback #9
Justice League of America #223 - Feb. 1984. Cover art by Chuck Patton and Dick Giordano.
This was the final chapter of an unusually-violent JLA story, with our heroes having to be a bit more ruthless if they wanted to defeat the bad guys. Aquaman, in particular, gets a really tough, bad-ass moment!

JLA Flashback #8
Justice League of America #125 - Dec. 1975. Cover art by Ernie Chan.
So, let's see: Aquaman supported Two-Face, Vibe, and Gypsy joining the JLA? I have to say, his judgment has to be questioned...

JLA Flashback #7
Justice League of America #88 - March 1971. Cover art by Neal Adams and Dick Giordano.
Mera makes a rare guest appearance with the JLA! Doesn't she look just fabulous as part of the team? Only took forty years to make it happen...

Update: As per the comments, here's the doctored version of the above cover that ran on the DC Nation page last month, addressing the widespread fanboy freakout over the New 52:

JLA Flashback #3
Justice League of America #156 - July 1978. Cover art by Rich Buckler and Frank Giacoia.
Yet another Justice League cover with Aquaman possessed by a spirit, collapsing with his fellow JLAers surrounding him. I wonder if this was one of Julie Schwartz's sure-fire cover concepts, like apes and the color purple?

This issue of Justice League--featuring a rare, Aquaman-centric cover--came out just a few weeks after I was born. The die was cast!

JLA Flashback #1
Justice League of America #7 - Nov. 1961. Cover art by Mike Sekowsky and Murphy Anderson.
This is the first installment of a new feature called JLA Flashback, where the Shrine will highlight some great covers from the classic Justice League of America series, which ran from 1961 to 1987.
With the new Justice League book right around the corner (August 31!), the Shrine thought it'd be fun to look back at some great JLA moments. Initially, we're going to focus on the more Aqua-Centric covers, like this one!
If you want to read more about the specific issue, just click on the cover to head over to Shrine sister site JLASatellite.com, which featured recaps of every single issue of the series!
