Justice League #4 Cover Preview

We've shown you Justice League artist Jim Lee's version of the Sea King last week, and today DC Comics released the cover image to issue #4 showing Aquaman arriving on the scene and taking charge. Wow!

I'm still not wild about the mutton chops, but I am glad he's not sporting a full beard either. I'm a little undecided on the jewelry, unless one of those stones turns out to be the necklace from TITANIC. The chain linking his triton to his belt is kind of a cool, though. That could create some interesting visual/action stunts. This looks great! Also confirms my thought that we're not going to see Arthur until the last page of issue #3 at the very earliest.

Poor Hal sure is getting kicked around. I may start feeling sorry for him.

Love that he had taken down all the other leaguers. Showcases his strength. Now when someone makes fun of Aquaman just show them this image. But that necklace... Uhg. But I'm pretty sure he won't be sporting it for more than an issue. Probably until flash makes for of him for it.

Fun of him for it*

His hands and legs are out of proportion to the rest of his body.

Okay I agree with some of the comments, but my main question is:

Has Aquaman ever — EVER — been featured on a JLA cover this prominently and/or positively? I certainly can't remember one. So pardon my French, but...

FUCK YEAH! 'BOUT DAMN TIME!

It's just amazing!!!

I am sure there is a story behind the necklace)

Remember, JL takes place about 5 years in the past so this is the 1st time we are seeing the Sea king in the post-Flashpoint new DCU chronologically.

I tend to agree with the last couple of comments. Whether I like the look or not (and I think I'm reasonably ok with it so far), how awesome is it that Aquaman is the main front and centerpiece of the JLA cover???? Or should we say Outrageous?!?!?!

I see that Jim Lee still refuses to draw feet.

Dear Lord... I'm sorry, I think Jim Lee is a BAD artist and even worse costume designer. What is up with that gargantuan glove and why does Aquaman look like the member of a boy band? The Dark Age of the 1990s was the ugliest in the medium's history and now one of its key architects is in charge of the visual look of the DC Universe. Blech.

I like it! And talk about front and center! I am very happy, artistic dramatics aside.

I hate the chain, necklace, mutton chops, belt and gloves. I really like Jim Lee's art but hate his Aquaman.

Yeah, Lee is doing his level best to ruin Ivan Reis' spectacular redesign from BLACKEST NIGHT. I agree with everyone who says his costume designs are pretty atrocious and the best days of his art were a couple decades ago.

Having said that, I was really impressed with his work in JUSTICE LEAGUE #1. I think this series will play to his strengths and as long as you don't try to figure out what is wrong with the gloves it's a really, really nice cover for Aquaman fans.

WOW I hadn't noticed Batman, Supes and WW in the back!

NICE!!!!

WOW. Just wow.

I think it's nicely rendered overall. Very powerful image. Not sure about the chain though; I can see Aquaman running along some street and the trident dragging behind him making sparks. But I do like the mutton chops. Guess I'm in the minority--again! But, the affair of the necklace: ??? What was Arthur doing in Santa Fe?

Constructively speaking, the color on this bugs me. the contrast is so poor that I didn't even see GL at first, much less the rest of the JLA.

Nice poses, though.

Love it.

Everyone's a critic here. Sad :(

By my count, there are 11 positives and 7 negatives regarding this piece, so I don't think "Everyone's a critic here" is quite fair, Derek.

I appreciate a good back and forth (as long as its polite and reasonably constructive), as I think an image like this is bound to inspire.

I have issues myself with the basic artistic construction of the piece, but I am *THRILLED* Aquaman is getting such a prominent showcase in DC's marquee title!

Oh wow, I didn't see WW either until Jared M mentioned it.

Green Aaron, I think (I guess) the contrast was kept low on most of the cover to help Aquaman pop front-and-center more. The contrast of the orange shirt to the blue water is great, but low on GL and the rock, and of course the others are even more subtle. It's not important we see whose ass Arthur just kicked, just that he kicks it in general. :)

BTW, I love the wave. Reminds me a bit of this famous piece: http://bit.ly/qKD3z1

And finally, I'm hoping that the chain, necklace, etc are all part of Arthur's Atlantean garb that the rest of the JL encourages him to eschew so he can be more agile (and less bling-y) on land. Let's hope... :) I'm also fine with the mutton chops. Very piratey.

I'm thinking maybe the chain retracts into the belt. It looks like there is some sort of mechanism around the top of the A on the belt that can retract and store the chain.

I really like it! I don't know why people are complaining. The hands and legs actually are in proportion. As for the necklace, don't really care for it but it doesn't matter because we all know it won't stay. If it even is in there. Covers are usually misleading. Don't care for how he did the gloves either, but again I think it will be ok. I've seen other pics of Aquaman from Jim Lee, and I can say the gloves are fine. Also, why get so mad/upset over cosmetic stuff? It has nothing to do with the story or character himself. This really is the best time to be an Aquaman fan, so stop complaining and just enjoy! :)

If poor Artie has Elephantiasis...
