Neptune's Fortune

sg
On Thursday, the Shrine announced that due to increased operating costs, we would be running ads on the site, which (in theory) would bring in some money via clicks. I put this off for a long time--years, actually--because I hated the idea of the Shrine being "uglied up" by some cheesy ads, or ads that have nothing to do with comics, movies, etc. But I felt it was necessary, so I went ahead with it.

Well, it's only been a couple of days, but I hate the ads. Hate them, hate them, hate them. They're ugly and stupid (what the hell is "Sheen Lantern", anyway? Nevermind, I don't want to know) and every time I load the page I see them there and wince.

So I thought maybe another way to go would be with the classic Paypal Donate button--if you click the button on the right, you'll be taken to Paypal where you can donate any amount you see fit--$1, $2, $5, $20, $10,000 (aka Bruce Wayne Level).

Be advised, the Shrine will always remain free. We've never charged for content, and never will. Things are tough for everyone right now (okay, except maybe the Koch Brothers) so if you enjoy the Shrine but simply don't have extra scratch to donate, don't worry. But if you do have the ability to make a donation to help keep the Shrine going, everyone here (staff growing all the time!) will truly appreciate it.

With Aquaman's increased presence in the DCU, there are lots of things I and the guys would love to do with the Shrine, in terms of adding more content, doing special "field reports", and other multimedia tie-ins. While Aquaman was mostly MIA in the DCU, the Shrine could keep up. But now that Aquaman is back, in a big way, this site needs to keep up. And as many supervillains have learned the hard way, its tough to keep up with Aquaman. Do you have any idea how expensive those Manta Ships are?

One final note: If you are a member of F.O.A.M. and you make a donation, you will receive a brand-new certificate specially made for donations. If you are not a F.O.A.M.er and you donate, you are automatically enrolled and your name added to the roll call at the bottom of the sidebar!

Okay, one final final note: Right now, I have the Shrine's account set up just to take one-time donations. If enough people ask, I will create a separate button for fans to subscribe, which would take a set amount ($1, $2) out each month, like they do for podcasts. If you would prefer that option, leave a comment!

Thanks for your attention Aqua-Fans; let us never speak of this again!

Update: We already have our newest F.O.A.M. member via a donation--Michael Sander. Thanks so much Michael, and welcome to F.O.A.M.!

I hope you get enough donations to be able to operate and not lose money. This site is great and I agree, the ads are ugly and intrusive.

Anon--Yep. I didn't think they'd bug me so much, but I guess the graphic designer in me just can't stand it: I don't like most of the content, or how the ads look.

I barely noticed the ads. I'm guessing each country displays different ads and Google-Japan decides to advertise gorgeous women in lingerie. They seem to fit right in with this blog.
