Marc Silvestri's art has always been sketchier and "rougher" looking than this, I don't see the connection or resemblance at all other than maybe big teeth on the creatures which is standard for "scary creature" type things. But all comic art is evolutionary anyway in that it's inspired and influenced by what's come before. Kind of like everything in society in general for the most part.
Stuart Immonen is very original, Anonymous, as is Francis Manapul, Mike Allred, Cameron Stewart--all contemporary guys. Moreover, Reis has more in common with Jim Lee and Alan Davis (kind of a hybridization of the two, to my eye) than Marc Silvestri. Even then I'd say if you can't pick out those four artists work from one another, you don't know very much about comics.
Very excited about this series--and a very nice cover that does exactly what it needs to. Establishes Aquaman as a strong force to be reckoned with, and that things are dangerous, exciting, and pretty cool below the ocean surface. As long as there's some humor and joy to this book, it's going to be the best the character's been in 40 years.
Oh how I will rage if the piranhas eat his hand. Other than that thought in the back of my mind I am in love with this cover. I cannot wait for our hero's rebirth, the JLA and hopefully all the future swag & toys we'll see out of this too!
There's something that bugs me about the trident that Aquaman wields in the cover. I'm assuming it's the Trident of Poseidon, which we first saw during Peter David's run. The trident also appears in the new Justice League cover. In fact, we've been seeing it more and more, even in the DCU online game. My question is ... has it ever been revealed what kind of power it possesses? I keep reading references to its "great power" but I've only seen Arthur use it as a straight-up weapon. The thing is ... a trident makes for an awkward weapon and it's much too big to be useful as a salad fork ... so I'm hoping it possesses some useful magical properties. Anyone know something about this?
Zack: about the hand, agreed! But I wouldn't mind if they brought back Charybdis and make him a more prominent, recurring villain.
JT: while I've always thought the trident looked cool, it is pretty impractical. Poseidon used it, too, so it makes me wonder — do he and Arthur use it to keep bad fish in line? Cuz it looks an awful lot like a harpoon...
But yeah, I'm very excited about this book! Can't believe it's finally happening (again)!

Looks awesome, hopefully it'll read that way too! :)
Looks like he's facing aliens from... Aliens.
That cover is amazing! Of all the covers DC unveiled today, I think Ivan Reis' just pops out, which should help push this book in stores.
Next question: Any chance the demons of the deep pictured here could be the DCNu's version of Atlanteans?
The response to this image online & via twitter has been incredible!
Is that image 3-D because it certainly looks like it.
Is it September yet?
You see the same "aliens" in the reflection of the points of the trident.
Actually these foes look more like Piranha people than the movie "xenomorph" Aliens.
marc silvestri does aquaman? looks like he brought the little demons from the darkness along for the ride...
kind of sick of artists straight copying other artists styles. who was the last original artist?

Outrageous!
I call this adventure "The Time I Fought a Bunch of Toothy Monsters in The Dark!"
Seriously, though, I like it a lot. Here's hoping the interior contents live up to the dynamic cover! With Johns at the helm, I bet they do.

I love this! Dark, dark ocean depths and toothy beasties! This is what makes Aquaman different.
Love it! So excited for this!

Looks great can't wait to read it. So far I'm counting...1...2...hands. Let's keep it that way.
