Aquaman #37 Variant Cover by Darwyn Cooke

sg
I have been reading Aquaman comics for over thirty years. I have seen some good Aquaman art, some bad Aquaman art, and some great Aquaman art. And I can say, with no reservation, that this wraparound variant cover to Aquaman #37 by Darwyn Cooke is already one of my all-time favorite Aquaman and Mera images, ever. Click to drink it all in.

Beautiful. Simply beautiful. Worthy of a frame and a place on the wall.

Gorgeous. Do we know if he's also doing a cover for Aquaman and the Others?

No Brent, no cover for THE OTHERS. :(

I saw this cover yesterday and my first thought was, "Oh, damn, Rob is going to LOVE that cover!" My second thought was, "Damn, I love that cover, too!"

The awesome Darwyn Cooke, what a great concept and design. I like his cover for Supergirl #37 with Streaky , Krypto and Supergirl on a white horse. Batman #37 has an amazingly complex cover and would be a great poster.

Having just seen all of the covers, can we just give Darwyn Cooke the keys to the DCU? I mean, I've thought this was the thing to do for years (either him or Bruce Timm), but this nails it. Just do it DC. Do it.

His ability to make things look both classic and fresh is EXACTLY what DC needs to please both the old disgruntled fans, and the new.

Man, does Darwyn Cooke nail "classic and timeless" or what?

Fantastic stuff!

Many of Cooke's variants in this group are just beautiful. Iconic. Even though I'm not a fan of Superman/Wonder Woman, that cover is so awesome. The Teen Titans cover as well, except that it just reminds us of what we can never have in the New52. The Batman/Alfred cover is perfection.

Earth 2 Chris, I agree! Cooke's style is refreshing and just feels new (even though it could be argued it is similar to illustrations in the 1950's but to have it in mainstream comics is definitely new).

I am not sure if you are a fan of John Romita Jr and his new work with Superman. His style is unique as well.

I haven't checked JR Jr.'s Superman yet. I'm a fan of his older work, but I can't say I like how his style evolved, personally. But I may have to give his Superman a try.

Chris, since DC won't give Darwyn Cooke free reign over the current DCU, perhaps a compromise:

THE NEW FRONTIER was his love letter to the Silver Age. How about a Bronze Age sequel of sorts. Sign Cooke to a new, similar project--a massive deluxe miniseries focusing on pre-Crisis Satellite era League or All-Star Squadron.
