The Great Superman Book

sgsg
This is Aquaman's listing from The Great Superman Book, an Enyclopedia-like tome written by Michael Fleisher and first published in 1978.

Of course, it concentrates on the Sea King's run-ins with Superman, but curiously makes no mention of their membership in the Justice League of America.

I'm proud to say, I've made Random Panels of the Day from every one of these stories!

I love this book but it is a bit frustrating, as it only covers Superman and Action, ignoring stories from Adventure, Superboy, Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane, and JLA. So if the JLA wasn't specifically mentioned in Superman or Action, Fleisher didn't include it.

Well....that is severely lacking to say the least.

Have you ever read the entry from the recent Superman Encyclopedia? I think it was published in 2009 or 2010? I have the book, I can share the entry if you'd like, but it'll be a few days as I'm in the process of moving and close on a new house tomorrow.

I had that! And the Batman and Wonder Woman volumes as well. Yes, there was much "Supermanica" that wasn't included, especially as the cut-off point was the early '70s, I think, but there was still tons of info in there that I didn't know beforehand. I spent hours poring over those books.

I had this one, but never got the Batman or Wonder Woman ones. I wanted to like it, but the dry writing style turned me off to it. I think I sold it at a garage sale many many years ago...?

I read somewhere--maybe in the Encyclopedia itself--that there were other volumes planned, among them one devoted to Aquaman himself, and I was so PSYCHED about it! Couldn't wait. There were so many questions I had about Aquaman at the time, and it would have been a great resource. Back then, of course, before Wiki articles and sites like this, if you had questions about the history of a character, and you couldn't afford/didn't have access to back issues, you had to rely on reprints, the occasional historical text pieces on the letterpages, or bits like "Diabolical Demons of the Depths" from DC Super Stars #7. I wanted to know all about Mera, for example; the early Mera stories were never reprinted. Where did she come from? How did they meet? That's stuff I wouldn't find out till many years later. Alas, the Aquaman Encyclopedia never came to pass. I'm glad I've lived long enough to have all this knowledge at my fingertips; comics kids today have it really good, info-wise.
