Splash Page Saturday: Action Comics #538

sg
This installment of Splash Page Saturday comes courtesy artist Alex Saviuk, who penciled the Aquaman strip when it ran intermittently as a back-up in Action Comics (#s 517-540).

Saviuk, who has had a long career in comics was and is a superbly talented artist (as this Aquaman sketch will attest) who could come up with dynamic layouts with the best of them--as you can see here with this wonderfully cinematic and exciting splash page. Unfortunately, IMO he was often paired with weak or simply indifferent inkers which I think kept him from being as highly regarded as he should have been (I don't think that's the case for this particular story, however).

One look at this page ought to tell you, the guy knew how to get your attention!

Quite exciting, indeed. Like the preview for an Aqua-movie!

Yeah, usually he was paired with Vince Coletta, who I never liked. Frank McLaughlin looks good with him here though.

I fondly recall how Saviuk drew Mera in that VERY skimpy black bikini. It made quite the impression on me, even when I didn't understand why...
