Listened last night, right after it popped up in my iTunes. Loved it and loved being able to see some of the pages on the Tumblr site! Will have to dig out my issues so I can go page by page, maybe go back and start over from the first Who's Who podcast again! Love these!
Listening to it right now, and just wanted to drop a quick line that the 80s/Super Powers-era Brainiac was not designed by George Perez, but by Ed Hannigan, who I think was DC's art director at the time. So maybe Hannigan copied from Perez's Brain?
Chris
Listened to the entire podcast, and I have to say you and Shag managed to make what is perhaps the most lackluster issue of Who's Who seem like a lot of fun. Even as a kid I remember being underwhelmed by this one. It's no one's fault but the alphabet!
I won't try to defend obviously lame characters like Bug-Eyed Bandit and Brain Storm, but BS (nice initials!) does have one feather in his cap; he was awarded a figure in Ideal's 1966 Justice League of America figurine line, which means he made it to plastic before Hal Jordan!!!
I think the standout entry in that issue is Blue Beetle by Steve Rude. I had just been introduced to BB in Crisis (like Shag said) but that lone page made me a fan of Ted Kord. I was psyched when his regular series began.
Oh,and as for the Who's Who awards, I'd like to offer two suggestions:
1. The Yellow Dot Awards
2. The Curt Swan Awards :-)
Chris
Random thoughts on the third issue of Who's Who....
1. I thought the Bug & Byte illustration was terrible. I couldn't tell what their costumes looked like (main figures too small) and the magenta of the background hurt my eyes. I couldn't tell it was a huge computer until Shag mentioned it.
2. Gotta admit that the best Curt Swan illo here was Brainiac Five. I agree it was probably because Karl Kesel's inking...
3. Why in God's name are there so many "black" characters?!? Please tell me why a green and purple character is called Blackrock. Please tell me why an orange and purple character is called Black Spider!!! Dumb dumb dumb.
4. I love me some Steve Lightle art, but god I hated Blok. Thank you, Gerry Conway, for adding a totally useless character to the Legion. What's his power? He has a larger mass than humans. That's it. So...living shield. Hooray.
5. I agree with Shag: Black Manta IS swimming. I always thought so.
6. Blue Beetle is hands down the best illo here. Definitely felt the love of Steve Ditko here from Steve Rude.
Keep up the great work, guys!!
Oooo, "Yellow Dot." Seconded!
Shout to Caffeinated Joe for the Loomis/Myers love!
Frank: Thanks. It is actually Jason & Michael, though. My ideal icon would have four guys: Jason, Michael, Aquaman and Steve Austin, the Six-Million Dollar Man. :)
Oh yeah... I had to blow it up to see that. It still looks like Loomis when looked at by centimeters instead of inches...
Wow! Thanks for all the comments! And thanks to Earth 2 Chris for the correction on Brainiac's redesign. Believe it or not, I came to the Aquaman Shrine just now to post that correction myself as I'd just stumbled across that in some research. Obviously Chris is The Fastest Commenter Alive. :)
Thanks again!
The Irredeemable Shag
I think I should finally give credit to my co-writer/guitarist on these themes. I feel like a jerk for not mentioning him before now, in spite of ALWAYS intending to. But the very talented guitarist who couldn't quite remember how to pronounce that dastardly, impish, Superman villain's name is none other than Ashton Burge!
So yeah. Give him a round of applause or something so he'll stop sobbing into his Batman pillow at night.
And as for the monthly award... how about the "That's Who! Award?"
Just listened to all 3 Who's Who podcasts at work yesterday...now what am I going to do today?!
For the Who's Who award how about "The Surprint Award"? I found it interesting that over the course of the three podcasts the word that was initially mocked by Shag became used quite frequently after that...LOL
