Splash Page Saturday: Aquaman #44

sg
This installment of Splash Page Saturdays comes from Aquaman #44, drawn by the incomparable Jim Aparo.

As the title suggests, in this issue the Sea King runs afoul of the Mob (as if you could do anything else), and Aparo perfectly executes the set-up, with the Aquaman logo incorporated into the background, crazy film noir-ish angles, and heavy blacks. Whoever colored this also helped out tremendously, covering the nascent victim in all blue, making Aquaman really pop off the background, a visual reminder he is *very* out of his element. Totally brilliant.

Aparo's compostions are so cinematic; I wonder if he ever did any movie storyboard work? Seems like a natural fit.
