Two Aquaman Covers

sg
Here's the cover to Emperor Aquaman #1--the first solo Aquaman book in almost five years--on sale tomorrow!

Run, don't walk, to your nearest LCS and buy a copy or three, Aqua-Fans--I don't wanna hear any of this "I don't like these big crossovers, waaah" crap. We've been waiting for ages to get the Sea King back in his own book, and even though this isn't the "actual" Aquaman and his new ongoing is already on the way, the only way us Aqua-Fans can show that Aquaman can support a book is to buy it when they make one!

sg
Also coming out (though not until July 5) is the Aquaman: Death of a Prince trade, reprinting Aquaman's mid-70s solo run in Adventure Comics, seven issues of his solo book, and some other stories from that time.

This cover was helpfully provided to the Shrine by none other than
Friend of the Shrine Paul Kupperberg, who wrote several of the stories contained herein!

You can pre-order the book via Amazon at a hefty discount just by clicking below:

...by doing so you'll be throwing some undersea loot at the Shrine as well as Mr. Kupperberg ("Tell the world, amigo! I'm on royalties on this puppy!")! This is a great collection and belongs on the shelf of every Aqua-Fan!

Update: I forgot mention this other Aqua-related book that hits shelves tomorrow, The All-New Batman: Brave and the Bold #8, starring Batman and...Aquaman!
sg
...it's a big week for the Sea King!

I vividly remember readying that very issue as a kid. That is why I am an Aquaman fan to this day. It was a great story that moved me. Thanks for reminding me why I like Aquaman. And yes I will be at the store tomorrow already pulling all the Flashpoint titles. Will anyone be doing a review?

EA#1 recap this Saturday!

Pretty nice job and the re-coloring of that Death of a Prince cover. Not sure how I feel about the Death of a Prince subtitle font and placement...

Yeah, even though that cover (Aquaman #62) pretty well sums up the theme of the book, its not the cover I would have chosen for this collection--its too downbeat, too mopey, exactly the opposite type of image Aquaman needs to project right now!

It gives me a bit of a chill that Arthur Jr.'s birth year is the same as mine according to his gravestone. Looks great and glad to know Mr. Kupperberg gets royalties.

Anybody know the exact contents of this book?

Anon-

It reprints Adventure Comics #s 441-452, the Aqualad back-ups from Adventure #s 453-456, and Aquaman (Vol.1) #s 57-63.

Truer words were never spoken!!!!

I've been waiting 4 years for this. It's been decades since Aquaman's last mini, and this is the first time EVER Aquaman is part of a big cross-over event! Let's show the sea king some support people!!! =P

Thanks Jared!

DC might have also chosen that particular cover for the trade because Mera is on it and she's been playing a bigger role in recent current storylines.

rob! said...

Jeez Steve, you're right! There are very few covers that have Mera on the, and the couple that do (like this one and this one ) really aren't as useful as a trade cover, since they focus so much more on the villains.

I hereby retract (most of) my criticism of the cover, tho I do wish there was something more dynamic and poster-y to use.

Aparo is The Man, but... would Mera's tears really be evident and streaming down her face, much less, underwater?!

rob! said...

Um...they're really big tears!

@Jason & rob!:

Big nerd moment coming...

Atlantean's bodies are incredibly dense, down to the molecular level. So Mera's tears have more weight than the water around them. This also explains why Atlanteans are able to style their hair so nicely instead of having it float upwards like normal humans does when underwater.

True fact!

This is why I love the Shrine.

Rob - Thanks for the rundown on the contents - this is exactly what I was hoping for! I loved these as a kid - started collecting with these very issues and became and Aquaman fan for life. Even experienced my first "cancellation" with these - so sad (although I was truly crushed when Aparo left after #59 - only later did I learn to appreciate Newton's art - hey, I was a young kid). Well, thanks again - looking forward to a VERY nostalgic summer with this volume!

No problem, Howard--its a good run, long overdue to be collected.

Let's all try to make Paul Kupperberg rich!!

Woohoo! Will be heading to the comic shop tomorrow, hope they still have at least one issue of Emperor Aquaman left on the stands!

And I hope to get the trade soon, too!

A great day indeed!

I intend to buy atleast five copies of this and give them out to my nephews and friends for Christmas. :-) Mr. Kupperberg, if you are coming to the Columbus Mid-Ohio Con or to the Baltimore Con, will you sign these for me?

rob! said...

Five copies of the TPB? That's taking one for the team, Russell!

Rick-

Just added that, thanks.

I did remember the book, but I forgot the cover was up on DC's site.

Outrageous!!

Wow...I am so excited about this, and Emperer Aquaman, and will probably even pick up BATB for Orin. Woo-Hoo!

Brent said...

Love the explanation of Mera's tears! Could it also be something as simple as she has hard-water tears? :)

I'm extremely excited about the DOAP TPB (sorry Paul, pre-ordered a while back...) but am very disappointed in the cover as well. Not so much the image, but the "Death of a Prince" typography. But then again, I dislike a lot of titling I see in comics. Who do I contact about applying for some freelance titling work?!?

Glad the A-Man has a book again!

But, seeing those two covers together?

I'll take the Nobel Sea King over the Apoplectic one any day of the week...

(So many "heroes" today seem to need major anger management therapy more than anything else.)
