Adventure Comics #111 - Dec. 1946

sg
Comics Weekend "The Man Who Robbed Davy Jones' Locker!" by Joe Samachson(?) and Louis Cazeneuve.

It's Adventure Sunday!

Watch Superboy destroy a $15,000 bowling lane while Aquaman explores one of the sea's greatest legends (kind of):

Aquaman sneaks inside, and discovers a gang of Japanese troops, counting their ill-gotten booty!

Aquaman wades in, fists swinging, and in the tumult one of the gang decides he's out for himself. He grabs a divers helmet and escapes, intending to harvest more riches for him and him alone:

...and so ends another adventure with Aquaman!

Wow, kind of a grim story, in a number of ways--you don't see too many comic book stories where all the villains die by committing ritual suicide.

Also, all the derogatory slang is unfortunate, but of course pretty par-for-the-course at this time in world history. You could argue that still beating up on the Japanese army a full year after World War II had ended is kicking someone when they're down, but consider that Nazis are still used as stock villains, some seventy years later, I guess this was pretty understandable.

That said, I'm kind of eager to see Aquaman take on Blackjack again...

Yikes! I've been using "Glib, glllubbb, glib!" in the completely incorrect context.

Still loving Adventure Sundays. I used to devour the 100 Page Super Spectaculars when I was a kid in the 70's. It seemed to me like they reprinted virtually everything from the golden age back then, with the exception of Aquaman. They did reprint his origin from the 40's in Secret Origins, so I knew there were a whole bunch of stories before the Ramona Fradon era. It's great to finally see them. And one a week is perfect for me, uncensored and all.
