Brightest Day #15 - Feb. 2011

sg
Comics Weekend "Whatever Happened to the Manhunter From Mars?" by Geoff Johns, Peter J. Tomasi, Patrick Gleason, Scott Clark, and more.

Yet another issue of Brightest Day that does not feature Aquaman or Mera (though the former does appear in a fantasy sequence, courtesy of the Martian Manhunter, who this issue is devoted to). Supposedly Aquaman returns next issue, in just two short weeks!

Aquaman does appear in an ad, though, which uses a detail from Frank Quitely's cover to the 2008 DC Comics Holiday Special:

I’d been too busy with finals and blogging to keep up with current goings on, so seeing that cover was a gut punch for me. I ran over to DC’s The Source blog to read the preview pages, and while not as bad as they could have been, I still feel unwell. Referencing one of the great Superman stories and a well-regarded derivation for Batman, each by a world-renowned comic/book author? Really showed how relatively pathetic Martian Manhunter is by saddling his riff with Pete friggin’ Tomasi, an editor-turned-journeyman scripter. Also, while I usually like Pat Gleason, I haven’t on this feature, and he’s no Curt Swan, George Perez or even Andy Kubert. Finally, both of the previous “Whatever Happened to…” were about celebrating all of a character’s continuity in a very metatextual fashion, while Tomasi consistently ignores anything that occurred in the first thirty years of Martian Manhunter comics. ARGH!

In my fondest dreams, Frank Quietely draws an All Star Aquaman series. That depiction is perfect.
