Cover to Cover: Best of DC Digest #5

sg
Another fun group shot by Ross Andru and Dick Giordano, this time for the cover to The Best of DC Blue Ribbon Digest #5, from 1980.

Lots of the DCU showed up to these "Year's Best" parties, though I have to wonder:

A)Why Aquaman is seated so far in the back, and

B)Why did Green Arrow let Travis Morgan sit next to Black Canary? That's only asking for trouble!

Sadly, Aquaman makes no appearance in any of the stories chosen for this volume, so this token appearance will have to do.

So, wait a minute...just who WAS included? Because there's the Wonder Twins but if Aquaman wasn't inside then they weren't, either. Also as you mention, there's Travis Morgan. And how about the Demon...please tell me HE was included, otherwise it's totally random that he is in the center of the cover!

The cover is pretty random. The stories are from DC Comics Presents (Superman and Sgt. Rock), Deadman, Jonah Hex, Superboy, House of Mystery, Batman, Private Life of Clark Kent, Haunted Tank, Secrets of Haunted House, and Superman.

Pretty low superhero content, huh?

I guess the idea is that The Super Friends and Green Lantern and Warlord were all nominated, but didn't actually win....? Weird.

Rob, I hope you feature that Teen Titans cover that had the corpse on it and the JLAers standing around berating the Titans. Aquaman is very clearly on the cover, and I looked and looked for that issue forever, and finally found it in SHOWCASE Presents. Aquaman, of course, is in maybe one panel of the book. (sigh)

I was looking at the wrong end of Elongated Man's neck, so I was wondering why he had Cain-from-House-of-Mystery's head. Now THAT'S scary.
