New York Times Crossword - 1994

sg
F.O.A.M. member Vincent Bartilucci sent me this detail from a 1994 New York Times crossword, featuring a very unusual clue!

I wonder how many people, kicking back with the Times crossword on a sleepy Sunday morning, knew the answer to #38 off the top of their heads. The answer would've probably have been very instructive in determining just how prevalent in the wider culture Aquaman was in 1994.

Thanks Vince!

The puzzle that you mention was published on Saturday, 4/2/94. Aquaman was used again on 2/9/98 (Saturday) and clued "Founding member of the Justice League" And again on Sunday, 9/9/09 and clued Superhero with an octopus named Topo.
