DC Heroes RPG - 1985

sg
This is the gorgeous cover (by George Perez) to the DC Heroes Role Playing Game, released by Mayfair Games in 1985.

Never having been a gamer in any way (I tried to get into D&D, but it just never took), this kind of stuff passed me by, even though the subject matter and characters really interested me.

It was sent to me by our newest F.O.A.M. member, Aaron Bias, who also included some of the inside material, which, unlike the cover (sadly), does feature Aquaman!

Here is Aquaman's Stat page:
sg
...someday, I want a description of me to read: "Wealth: Affluent, Job: Adventurer."

sgEach character also came with a little token piece, and as you can see, Mayfair used one of Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez's classic stock art poses for both. Can't go wrong with Garcia-Lopez.

Seeing this stuff makes me wish I had checked out the game at the time--thanks Aaron, and welcome to F.O.A.M.!

I asked for this for Christmas in 1985 and got it. I was so psyched. It was the pre-Crisis DCU in a box! Up-to-date characters, costumes, the works! And then I read the rules...they were WAY beyond what I was expecting. And all of my friends had no desire to get involved in "campaigns" and such. So it all stayed in the box, and I got it out and looked at it from time to time. I did enjoy the reference books quite a bit though.

Chris-

you hit on why I never got into D&D, or any of the RPG games--there were so many rules that it made the games soooo boring for me.

even this game, where I could play as Aquaman (!!), still couldn't hold my interest.

but, yeah i agree, the packaging was boffo.

I bought the Mayfair LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES Character Guide or whatever it was called for the art, character synopses, and history (written by Paul Levitz himself). I never played the game, though. :-)

I was a HUGE Mayfair DC Heroes RPG fan. I bought many of the modules/sourcebooks and was in a campaign with friends for a few years.

Similar to what you've done here, I recently dug up my copies to publish the Firestorm appearances. If you'd like, I can look for further Aquaman appearances in the Mayfair games. I'd be happy to scan them in and send them to you. Just let me know.

This cover brings back so many happy memories for me! Thanks for making my day!

I used to play this with my cousin, who gm'ed the game. When I got hold of this set a couple of years ago, I couldn't figure out the game mechanics to save my life. So, While I have tons of sourcebooks and modules, as well as some D&D geek friends who would play this, I have no idea how to play any more.
