Aquaman by Hembeck

sg
sg
For today I thought I'd post two Aquaman-related cover re-dos by the great Fred Hembeck.

Both of these appeared in Hembeck's independently published collections of his work, the Aquaman #42 cover in Hembeck #1 and the Lois Lane #72 cover in Hembeck #5 (you can find almost all the Hembeck books on eBay for not a lot of money, and I suggest you do, they're a lot of fun and packed to the staples with gags).

It occurred to me a while back, when scanning the top piece in to post it here, that I have yet to talk about that classic issue of Aquaman on the Shrine, which is ridiculously overdue, since its cover is one of the great images of 60s comic books. So be here tomorrow where we will discover the delights that await us behind that amazing cover for Aquaman #42.

And for good measure, we'll be talking about "Lois Lane's Aquaman Tricks!" on Sunday!

Or you can shoot over to Hembeck's own web-site

http://www.hembeck.com/index2.htm

and order a copy of his new book The Nearly Complete Essential Hembeck Archives Omnibus which contains both of the books Rob mentions above plus his 5 other collections from the 80's and about a billion other fun Hembeck strips and illustrations. Pretty much everything except his Daily Planet strips and his Marvel Age pages. Hence the "Nearly Complete" portion of the title.

The book is $25,00 (plus postage & handling) and Fred'll even sign it for ya. If you send him and additional $25.00 for a total of $50.00 (plus P&H) he'll draw the character of your choice on the black first page. I got a neat lookin' Black Manta!

Sorry to hi-jack your blog for a commercial but it's for Fred's book so I figured you wouldn't mind!

BTW: Among the half a dozen Hembeck pieces that are in my art collection, I've got three of Fred's cover re-interpretations. All three feature Aquaman in staring roles, of course.

That should read that he'll draw the character of your choice on the BLANK first page.

D'oh!

I ordered most of those books when they originally came in, and most if not all of them have Aquaman doodles on the front pages. I even have an actual Aquaman piece of art from Fred because I begged him for it. :-) I know he isn't much of an Aquaman fan himself, but his version of the character is kinda cute. I would love to see a Hembeck illustrated SUPER FRIENDS story. :-)

Don't forget, Rob! Aquaman, Black Manta, and Ocean Master guest star tonight on a new episode of Cartoon Network's Batman: The Brave and the Bold, entitled "Evil Under the Sea!" I was surprised not to see a notice here today. I'm so excited that I can barely wait...
