DC Super Friends Ad - 2008

sg
This is the full-page ad running in most "Johnny DC" for the DC Super Friends comic, drawn (I think) by J.Bone, whose work is really appealing to me.

I've said it before, but I'm sooo glad Aquaman got tapped to be part of this toy line and accompanying comic. Since it concentrates on just six characters (sorry, J'onn!), Aquaman gets to play a large role, and I think plants him in front of a new generation of kids the way H-B's Super Friends did for mine.

I had planned to run the above ad at some point, but today was the perfect day, because the newest issue of DC Super Friends came out yesterday, and Aquaman gets a couple of really good moments (courtesy writer Sholly Fisch and artist J.Bone) in the story.

On the very first page, while Metropolis throwing a public birthday for Superman, Aquaman gets to brag a little:
sg
"Of course, I am their king..."--love it.

The plot involves Superman getting devolved into an infant, but still retaining all of his super-powers.

The Super Friends struggle to figure out a way to get him under control, and its Aquaman who displays some mad parenting skills:
sg
Fantastic! Nice job, Arthur!

As with all the issues of this book, there are fun little extra pages of puzzles and such, and this one comes with a DIY birthday card:
sg
Very cute.

Finally, on the letters page, young Terrell Belsen sends in a drawing of his three favorite heroes:
sg
...Aquaman is looking a little 1990s there, a surprising take for a little kid to take. Nice drawing, Mr. Belsen.

Whoever at DC and/or Mattel tapped Aquaman to be involved in the DC Super Friends marketing juggernaut, The Aquaman Shrine owes you a drink.

I'm a few issues behind on this for the boy. Need to catch up.

Some may see it as a big toy ad, but its good to see wholesome versions of these characters out there for kids. Comics have gone too far afield of that, IMHO.

That kid-drawing may be left over from the JLU comic. They used to run those all the time in the letters page, and it looks like the JLU Aquaman. I wonder if my kid's Batman drawing will ever make it in?

My kids love this comic. Even as I have been having to cut back on my books, I try to pick stuff up for my kids to keep the hobby going into a new generation.

I've been reading a lot of comments on other sites about how kids don't want books like this or "Tiny Titans" but they are well done and a great way to keep my two kids (11 and 5) hooked.

A non-ridiculous Aquaman being exposed to our nations youth! Huzzah!

I liked the issue with the Jester League of America, consisting of Joker, Harley Quinn, Punch, Jewelee, Prankster and Trickster.

My Son loves Superfriends and Tiny Titans, they're the only DC book in my pull file.

Somewhere my son got a birthday card with Superfriends stand ups in it, Aquaman showed up in my car, he's never leaving.
