Shelf Talker - 1997

sg
This is a nifty die-cut promotional "shelf talker" that were made by or for someone called Dino Comics for international use that stands around 5" wide.

I don't remember much more about it than that, but I know the previous seven in the series were Superman, Batman, Superboy, Nightwing, Dark Claw, Super-Soldier, and Catwoman. It seems like there had to have been more, right? Wonder Woman, Flash at the very least.

This image is taken from an early issue of JLA, with solid art by Howard Porter and John Dell.

I've still got some shelf talkers from my retail days, and I'm confident Diamond didn't distribute this one for use in the U.S. I'd have remembered that. Got a nifty Wonder Woman counter dump from when John Byrne took over, though...

I think if I'm not mistaken Dino is a German publisher who repackages US comics into other languages.

I remember visiting a company that did this at the Frankfurt bookfair.

I'm sorry, but what exactly are these "shelf talkers"? I don't understand what they are; some sort of stand-up display items?

Man, that's some beautiful art for that sucker, Scruffy Aquaman has rarely looked that awesome.

I know that image was used in a JLA mobile that was sent out through Diamond around the time the Morrison/Porter series debuted. I know this because I worked at a comic shop at the time, and I hung it up in the store!

shelf-talkers are little cut-outs you put either on or behind shelves that pop up past the books they're selling, hopefully drawing you in...

That is really nice art, but captain hook just slays me.

I've never seen one for any other B to C lister, so that's pretty cool.

I throw Aquaman a fair amount of shade for a character I like so much, but I must insist that he's A-List... even if only the lowest possible rung of the A-List. He's Aquaman. Everyone knows Aquaman, regardless of how his book sells.

I completely forgot about that mobile. I had one hung at one of my shops, and I assume I either gave it away or sold it way back when...

This wasn't meant to be a shelf-talker. It is some kind of stand-up
It was put inside of books by Dino which was the German publisher of DC comics for years.
Sometimes these stand-ups were added at variant issues or as gifts for subscribers or simply for conventions.
There were up to 40 different ones with DC artwork.
Some of them were chosen according to the current publications, e.g. Superman Blue & Red, Superman holding dead Supergirl, The Dark Flash, Dark Claw...
