DC Super Heroes Dominoes - 1980

sg
Hey kids! Rememer dominoes? Little thin blocks that you knock over--way better than a Wii! Hey, kids--where are you going? Kids?!?

This is one of those items that I'm surprised Aquaman made it onto, since all they had room for was a headshot. The manufacturer would've had a good reason to drop him for someone more obviously superhero-y, like Green Lantern, Hawkman, or Plastic Man even. But there he is, and boy am I glad!

The stock art is a mish-mash of styles--that's obviously the iconic Infantino Batman, and Robin looks Irv Novick-ish. I don't recognize Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, or Batgirl, but Aquaman...Murphy Anderson?

Eh.

That's all I can muster for those dominoes is "eh." And you know damn well why.

I'm actually very surprised Aquaman got the nod over Hal. Somebody fouled up there.

Surely they could have found a way to fit the Joker, Penguin, and Riddler on there. Maybe that Scarecrow feller. Commissioner Gordon...

As usual I have to clap my hands at the awesomeness of this blog!! I keep cheking it daily.

But I have to ask you some technical question too, I´m amazed at how great the Aquaman face looks like an icon in your web-address bar, up there (right before the "http://aquamanshrine.blogspot.com/" text). I want to customize my blog in a similar way but I don´t know how to do it. What can i do? I´m so naive in blogs...

Thanks in advance and congratulations for your blog again ;)

My guesses are that it's Ramona Fradon (Super Friends' era) Aquaman, and that's a pretty obvious Dick Giordano Batgirl, don't you think? Flash and Superman have definite Jose Garcia-Lopez overtones.

jason-

those little graphics are called Favicons. type in Favicon in google and itll take you to several sites that will help you create one, and then tell you what and where to paste the code so it shows up.

lmk if you need more help, and thanks!

Batgirl comes from a Giordano pin-up that ran in Detective or Batman Family in the late 70s. It can be seen in the Batman in the 70s tpb. I had a valentines punch-out book with that same BG image.

Robin almost looks Don Newton-like to me...

On further inspection, Superman appears to be a redraw of the Neal Adams head shot that was repurposed for the front of the 1979 Mego cards.

Wow! I thought I was the only one who remembered these dominos! I picked up a set in a junk sale years ago. I've always wondered about the Aquaman headshot. Especially since the Superman, Flash, and Robin headshots look so iconic. The Aquaman just looks kind of blah.

I'm totally loving your blog, Rob. Keep up the great work!
