Surf & Turf #'s 2 & 3

sg

My pal and frequent AquaCommenter Rick Phillips just opened a swell blog called
Mail It To Team-Up all about, you guessed it, the art of team-up comics. A fine idea for a blog, since who doesn't love a good team-up?

Anyway, Rick asked if he could use my
faux cover for the Aquaman Comic of My Dreams, the team-up title Surf & Turf. I said sure, and Rick put it up on the site.

That got me inspired to work on the covers of the next few issues. Back when I was putting the first one together, the imagined storyline for the book was that each of the first six issues would feature the Sea King teaming up with each original member of the JLA, culminating in the seventh issue where he officially rejoins the team.

So I continued in this vein with the covers for issues 2 and 3, in a story that could only be called "Crisis in Atlantis." Also, I came up with a retroactive explanation for why I have different DC Comics "bullet" logos in the background--in some way, the storyline involves Aquaman and the others to travel through time to different eras in DC's publishing history, graphically represented by the logos DC was using at the time. Makes sense, no?

As you can see, I spared no expense in Surf & Turf--#2's cover is by Alex Ross, #3 by Neal Adams. But I promise--no variant editions.

Thanks for the link Rob. Both covers look great. Dare I ask if I can use them on my site too? Also, it sounds like a great storyline.

Cool, I definitely like these covers. What menace would the heroes face? I'd love to see the other covers in the series!

the story(in my head) is a straight-up, "Crisis on Earth-Whatever" type story that the JLA did so well.

something like the Lord of Time has teamed up with Vandal Savage and figured out that, in the future, it is Aquaman whose presence in a future JLA is the lynchpin to saving the universe or something.

...so he goes back in time and attacks Atlantis, hopefully distracting Aquaman and keeping him there, so never rejoins the JLA, or something like that.

i know that it looks like it was drawn by Dick Dillin, tho. :)

Looking forward to the Martian Manhunter "issue," seeing as I finally started a blog (largely inspired by this one) to replace my old website. Which reminds me-- how do you set-up that little Aquaman head icon that appears on my bookmarks/tabs?

P.S. Might I suggest Kevin Maguire for that crossover, as he draws both characters fantastically and is almost famous enough to rate the company? If not, George Perez seems an obvious choice...

frank-

cool manhunter site! i added it to my list o'links.

that little Aquaman head is called a favicon. if you google it youll find lots of sites that help you create one. then you basically put it in your images folder wherever they are and then you add some code to the blog template right at the very top. good luck!

Maguire's a good choice, i'm of course beholden to what i can find and what looks right. but i plan to do 'em sometime...

Argh! Too... Much... Hassle!!! Thanks again though, and I added a link, though I have 0 traffic to benefit from right now...

The latest update spotlights Aquaman and the links...

I hope the Aquaman-Batman team-up features a cover by Jim Aparo... and maybe Aquaman-Superman would be Curt Swan? Or maybe Dick Dillin? Good luck finding appropriate pics! :-)
