DC Comics Guide to Good Health - 1977

sg

I'm not sure how or where you got this neat little item at the time, but I do know it was made in conjunction with The World's Greatest Superheroes brand of chewable vitamins debuting at the time, and it even gives you(or more accurately, your Mom) a coupon for 20 cents off a bottle!

This booklet runs twelve pages, and features DCU stars Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, and of course Aquaman teaching kids about brushing their teeth, exercising regularly, and eating healthily. You get to see Batman and Robin chow down on some PB&J, Wonder Woman jump rose, Batgirl brush her hair, and Aquaman swim, all via beautifully clean, solid art by Neal Adams and Dick Giordano. Why Superman isn't participating is anyone's guess.

Update: There's been a bit of a debate as to who drew what inside this book, so here are some bigger shots that will hopefully settle it:

There were two illustrations for this campaign included in The Art of Neal Adams. That is where I heard of these drugs. I never actually saw them for sale anywhere, though.

It's possible Superman had his own vitamins from a competing manufacturer. I know there have been several Superman vitamins marketed over the years.

Cool Adams artwork! I saw the large figures of Batman and Robin in TwoMorrows Titans Comanion, and wondered where it came from!

I think it's Adams Continuity Studios, anyway. I'll have to check the credit in the Titan's Companion. Of course they could have been wrong. It looks a bit too much like Adams to be Giordano alone, although in this era it's really hard to tell. And i think Giordano was partners in Continuity for a time when it was first formed.

Personally, it looks to me like Adams trying to "soften" his Batman and Robin to make them more kid-friendly, and somewhat TV-show like. The Wonder Woman and Aquaman figures look pretty Adamsesque to me.

Superman's not there because his Kryptonian organic structure requires different health tips. They released a second one starring Superman & Supergirl for Kryptonian kids.

"Expose yourself to mauve Kryptonite three times a day to keep that tartar off of your teeth!"

finally an explanation that makes sense!

but then...shouldn't they have had separate vitamins for Amazons or Atlanteans, and ran this one with the Batman Family, Green Arrow, and maybe the Mr.terrific?

The cover is definitely Neal Adams because it was in his book. The drawings at the bottom actually look more like Jerry Ordway. I have one of his earliest pieces, The Super Hero Coloring Book that looks a lot like these poses. Can you enlarge a few of the pics from inside the pamphlet for us to examine??

Pshyeah. Who cares about silly girls or fish people?

Love the larger images Rob.

I personally now think it's Adams (with possibly inks by someone else). It's just his more commercial looking style that he used on the Power Records and other licensed art.

Yeah, I think they're all by Adams, too. That pic with Batman in front (not the waving one) looks just like another illustration from The Art of Neal Adams. It might be inks by Dick Giordano, but I'm guessing it was all by Neal. Thanks for enlarging them. They look great!
