Memories of SDCC

With the San Diego Comicon now underway, my thoughts drift back to the first year I went to that amazing event, 1998.

I attended with several of my fellow Kubert School veterans, and I told them before we ever hit the show floor that my first goal was to scour the dealers for unique Aquaman items. There ended up not being a whole lot--I picked up an Captain Action flicker ring, some comics, a puzzle I think. But all the searching was worth it when I found what you see above.

This is a Japanese figurine in what is called the "Super Deformed" style. I had never seen such a thing before and was intrigued/horrified. I immediately bought it, against the wishes of one of my friends, who simply found it terrifying. I then, of course, spent the rest of the trip leaving this thing in various spots in our hotel room so it would be the first thing he saw when he woke up.

Good times, good times.

I still love those things. I can't remember the first time I saw them, but back in the day before there were 150 cutesy super-deformed figures out at one time, they were unique.
