Secret Origins #5 - Oct. 2014

sg
Comics Weekend "The Mission" by Jeff Parker, Daniel HDR, and and Guy Major.

Since this review of Secret Origins #5 is going up so soon after it was published, we're going to avoid getting into too much detail on the plot, as not to spoil it for those who haven't read it yet. Aqua-Fans, you can proceed safely.

This origin story starts in Xebel, with Mera undergoing training for her mission to come to "our" world and kill the King of Atlantis. While her father respects and trusts her, others in the kingdom are not so at ease: namely, Nereus, who wants to lead the mission and claim Mera as his bride.

Mera is sure of her mission, until she actually meets her target, who is not anything like what she has been told:

Aquaman and Mera go on a sort of first date (awww!), and it becomes clear to her that her mission might not be completed for a long, long time.

I am absolutely thrilled that Mera is getting a solo story this soon into Secret Origins' run. This represents her new found prominence in the DCU, something that's been building ever since Blackest Night. The story of their first meeting is quite charming; Jeff Parker seems to firing on all cylinders right now when it comes to Aquaman!
