Adventure Comics #274 - July 1960

sg
Comics Weekend "Aqua-Queen" by Robert Bernstein and Ramona Fradon.

It's Adventure Sunday!

Aquaman and Aqualad meet a comely redhead who can brave the seven seas! No, not that one:

Aquaman is peeved at Dale's bragging, and demands to know how she has gained such miraculous abilities. In fact, Dale even said she can command sea creatures, too!

They both swim out to a derelict ship, and Aquaman is shocked to see that his finny friends no longer listen to him. Dale steps (er, swims) in, saying she's taking over:

...and so ends another adventure for Aquaman and Aqualad!

Nobody drew alluring-yet-adorable women like Ramona Fradon, so it was welcome any time a woman was the big guest guest star in an Aquaman adventure. Sadly, Dale was never seen again, having learned her lesson. I bet she had more than a little wistful regret a few years later when she saw Aquaman got hitched.

One minor quibble: What is what that splash page title? It looks like they forgot to do it up right, so someone grabbed a felt-tip and scribbled in the title before sending the pages off to the printer.

You'd think an heiress would have more than one swimsuit.

Viva Adventure Sunday!

I'm guessing that Dale...never swam again. Probably moved to South Dakota, to boot. We're just a few years away from the real queen of the seas.

Yeah, imagine being exposed as a fraud would make her a joke on the Earth-1 version of Jack Paar's "Tonight Show"... wonder if "showing up Aquaman" was really worth it there, Dale.

Elsewhere (or else*when*) on Earth-1...

Re: Superboy: an alien who looks like a hairy Bigfoot-like monster comes to Earth to execute nine criminals from his homeworld (posing as prominent Smallville folk) by turning them to stone, which Superboy seems to go along with (accompanying the guy through Smallville).

And they take time out from executing criminals to teeter-totter?
