In this debut episode, I am joined by guest Chris Franklin (aka Earth-2 Chris) to talk about two horror-centric Power Records adventures: "A Story of Dracula, The Wolfman, and Frankenstein" and "The Man-Thing: Night of the Laughing Dead!"

As much as I despised the Power Records episodes of the Fire & Water Podcast, now that it's its own show I can fully embrace these wacky old recordings and the short handful of minutes worth of discussion they elicit from Rob and some other guy.
This was by far the best launch for one of the Fire & Water family of podcasts since the original way back in 2011! Way better than the inaugural Who's Who Podcast! Way, way better than Shag's Hero Points Podcast! And way, way, waaay better than Diabolu Frank's Loco for DC Samplers Podcast!
Part of what made this episode great for me was the subject matter. I'm an old softy for the Universal movie monsters and Marvel's versions of them. WEREWOLF BY NIGHT is one of my all-time favorite comics, I paid an offensive amount to get the TOMB OF DRACULA omnibus volumes, and every time I visit a new comic book store, I check to see if they have any back issues of GIANT SIZE MAN-THING.
Thanks for sharing these crazy recorded adventures from Power Records. Now that I have this to look forward to, I can stop listening to Fire & Water.

I'm now a sucker for all things Universal (and Hammer), and can't get enough of them. I've been investigating the Marvel Horror books I missed out on in my cowardly youth. I really do love Tomb of Dracula, but I need to get the third Essentials volume so I can finish Wolfman's run. Can't say I'm a fan of Wolfman's favorite character, Harold H. Harold, but other than that, it's gold.

Loved this episode! Like everyone else I'm a huge fan of the Universal monsters, and couldn't help but grin at the Wolfman references, and the Lugosi-like voice of the Count! I really liked the female werewolf twist too
I do have to say though when Rob mentioned the Drac/Frank/Wolf not being for kids, I didn't think it was that bad...but when the Man-Thing episode opened with a clown committing suicide?! To say I was unprepared would be an understatement!
Looking forward to more of these in the future!

I too thought of A&C Meet Frankenstein when the woman is thrown out the window. Amazingly, I had that very scene come up at work last year. A coworker of mine, who was at least 20 years older than me, told me that as a little girl, that scene used to scare the bejeesus out of her! I confided to her that the scene which always scared me was the Monster on fire stalking down the pier before crashing through into the lake! Hard to believe A&C Meet Frankenstein mentally scarred us all so much!
The Man-Thing story was awesome; my local used book store has both Essentials and I keep resisting buying them, but I may have to buy at least volume 1 at this point. Chris said it best, “Because kids are not scared of clowns enough already.”
I loved this show! Y’all should repost this one every Halloween season! In closing, let me just say “Stand up and get beat to death like a man!”

I think we should start a class-action lawsuit against Universal and the estates of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello...they mentally traumatized us! ;-)
That's a great story Luke. The part with the monster on the pier is pretty intense too. The rather complacent look on Strange's face as he shambles on into the flame as if he has no will to stop only adds to the mood.
Fun fact about the scene in A&C Meet Frank where the Monster throws the woman through the window: either during that scene, or directly before it, Glenn Strange broke his ankle, and Lon Chaney Jr had to step in as the monster for a few days of shooting. You can tell it's Chaney in the scene immediately following Sandra's death by monster-throw. As he's chasing Bud and Lou out of the lab, it's clearly the much rounder face of Chaney under the big brow. Accounts seem to vary on who did the window-throw.

Man-Thing was pretty creepy from the opening of a clown suicide to his creepy voice & clown music.
They got away more w/ the record than the comic book itself.
I didn't even know these existed until a year or 2 ago.
There were no comic book stores around my area growing up only a corner store that sold half cover comic books. I did get The Official Adventures of Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern LP at a grocery store.
Is there any way you scan the panels of the Power Record comic books?
Sorry it has taken me so long to comment. But I needed that time to recover from the major heebie-jeebies that Man-Thing story gave me.
I can only imagine what I would have thought of that story if I heard it as a kid. Like Chris, I think the warbly calliope music in the background whenever the clown talks is chilling. Brrrr ....
Yeah, that Man-Thing story just leaves you dumbfounded for a bit, huh?

18) I'd like to consider myself a cinephile, but my second hand copy of Beastie Boys Video Anthology and my girlfriend's Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (for a school paper) being the only Criterion releases in the house put the lie to that.
19) My inflation calculator has Rob "Money" Kelly's $2 in 1980 at $5.67 today. I got $1.50 five years later to dig out peg warming Super Powers from the bargain bin, hence my Martian Manhunter action figure. Blue Light Les Misérables. No wonder Richie Rob's favorite hero is royalty!
20) I think all four Marvel shows would work best in a cinéma vérité style, along the lines of Joe Lynch's #TruthinJournalism or Joe Carnahan's Daredevil Reboot Sizzle Reel. It would fit the budgets and be both commercially (S.H.I.E.L.D.) and artistically (not S.H.I.E.L.D.) satisfying. Based on my '70s Romita Power Man t-shirt, you know which show I'm most down for.
21) Kids, sometime Robby & Shaggy fight, but that doesn't mean they don't love one another.
22) I think that geeks routinely critiquing The Big Bang Theory speaks more negatively about the fan community than the show itself. It's just a sitcom, whose audiences crave broad, diminishing, simplistic observations with mildly (often caustically) humorous intent. Sheldon & Leonard are to nerds as Archie & George were to race relations. Nothing new under the sun.
23) I'm on to you, Luke Jaconetti, trying to claim my crown as Captain Contrary! I do like a good villain book. I kind of wish I'd jumped on Superior Spider-Man. Nothing from DC, though.
24) Count Drunkula's New 52/Weird Science analogy is so perfect that I'm just going to wait DC out until General Public starts playing and I get to grab it in the booty. Everything good in the universe just keeps coming back to Robert Downey Junior.
