The Aquaman Shrine at the 2013 NYCC

sg
I didn't attend this year's NYCC as either Press or an Exhibitor, so my attendance was limited to a mid-afternoon drop-in at the Captain Action booth to do a signing event for mt book Hey Kids, Comics!: True-Life Tales From The Spinner Rack.

I did the signing with Shrine Patron Saint and all-around good-egg Paul Kupperberg, who has an (awesome!) essay in the book. So after a "quick" trip to Artists Alley to say hello to Rod, Joe, and Ivan (which, with the teeming masses flooding the Javitz Center, took almost 45 minutes), I sat down with Paul, pens in hand.

A cross-section of people I've gotten to know over the years stopped by: fellow Hey Kids! essayists Kevin Dilmore, Paul Castiglia, and Sholly Fisch, Fire and Water Podcast listeners Randy Caldwell, Lucien Desar, and David Pascarella, as well as West Anthony, co-host of one of my favorite podcasts The Auteurcast, and the official narrator of all things Ace Kilroy. Paul and I had a good time; we sold some books, had a few laughs, and I got to watch Paul schmooze with two lovely ladies cosplaying as Wonder Woman and Supergirl, both characters he has been involved with during his career at DC.

I also ran into Patrick Willems, creator of Aquaman: The Teen Drama. We talked a bit about the series, and I have every confidence that Aqua-Fans have nothing to fear about this project. Sure, it's silly as all get out, but Patrick's a fan of the Sea King and this seems to be a good-natured poke in the ribs to both superheroes and overheated CW-style teen soaps.

By the time the signing was over, the thought of lugging around my two-ton suitcase around the overly-stuffed show floor filled me with horror, so I decided to call it a day. I stopped by the table of artists John Trumbull and Bill Walko, who were kind enough to provide me with a badge for the day--without them I never would have been able to even get in the door! I owe you, fellas.

I also have to thank Friend of the Shrine Ed Catto who, along with Joe Ahearn and the rest of the Captain Action team, were kind enough to give up some of their precious booth space so I could set up my Hey Kids! stuff. They were enormously friendly and welcoming, and it is deeply appreciated!

I only took one picture while at the show, and this was it:

It sounds like you had an awesome time! And the young Aquafan did a wonderful job on her outfit!

Great to meet you Rob! The convention was steadily increasing in attendance as the week went on. I think Sunday was the the most because there were fewer panels for people to attend. By Sunday there were lines of people to go through long boxes. (Annoying for me but still good that people were buying!) I got stacks and stacks of comics so I was in bliss. Can't wait for it again next year. \ld
