Rack Toys: Cheap, Crazed Playthings

sg
Late last year, my friend Brian Heiler (he of the genius and influential Plaid Stallions blog) published a book, Rack Toys: Cheap, Crazed Playthings, all about an obscure, dusty corner of toy collecting.

If you don't know what a "rack toy" is, here's a boiled down version: a rack toy is any toy packaged to hang on a peg, usually priced very, very low, with the idea that it would catch a kid's eye, which in turn lead to them begging their parents to buy it for them. Since the prices were so affordable (relatively), the besieged parent usually gave in and grabbed the damn thing off the rack.

The breadth and depth of rack toys is truly staggering, which led to some...less-than-on-model products, to put it mildly. There were a number of Super Friends rack toys, but Aquaman's presence among them was pretty minor. But he did get his own pair of Swim Goggles, and Brian asked me to send him a picture of them for the book:

Rack Toys is a load of fun, and I'm happy and proud to be part of the book. If you love obscure toys, weird Americana, or pop culture, you'll love it. You can head over to Amazon and pick yourself up a copy (and while you're at it, get Hey Kids, Comics! too!)!

Brian is a great guy, and he's created one great book! It's a snap-shot of pop culture goodness, in cheap plastic form. From the sublime to the completely ludicrous, it's all here.
