Adventure Comics #232 - Jan. 1957

Comics Weekend "Aquaman Joins The Navy" by Bob Haney(?) and Ramona Fradon.

Yes, you can sail the seven seas
In the navy
Yes, you can put your mind at ease
In the navy
Come on now, people, make a stand
In the navy, in the navy"
 --Trad. seafaring song

It's Adventure Sunday!

The title pretty much says it all, so let's watch Aquaman swab the poop deck:
The CPO of the Clay assigns his recruit a new task: clean the mountain of dirty dishes that have piled up ever since the washing machine broke down. But this does not deter Aquaman, who again calls on his finny friends to work an assembly line, dragging the dishes down into warm gulf stream waters, where they are scrubbed clean by sponge fishes:
...and so ends another adventure with Aquaman!

The Aquaman of the 1950s really was an exceedingly nice guy...this Weems guy is a total jerk to his new crew member for no good reason, but with a wink all is forgiven. Sheesh.

The Sea King's octopus pal Topo is so named for the first time in this story, meaning that there are/were an Earth-1 Topo and an Earth-2 Topo. I wonder if the Crisis affected the latter like it did Aquaman?

Ignoring my previous-stated remarks on the Earth-1/Earth-2 divide, not only did Crisis get rid of the duplicates of Earth-1 heroes, it also eliminated any duplicates of their supporting casts or villains (Joker, Luthor, Alfred, Etta Candy, etc.). It also deleted any non-Earth-1 supporting cast members of the Earth-2 versions (such as several Golden Age Superman characters that didn't/couldn't exist on Earth-1, like Hocus and Pocus, or Lois' niece Susie Tompkins). However, a few villains of deleted Earth-2 heroes did get reassigned; for instance, the Ultra-Humanite became a JSA villain after Earth-2 Supes was retconned away. Thus, if there was an Earth-2 Topo, he'd have been toast like his owner...

Re: Superboy: This month's story sees the block of Kryptonopolis where Kal-El was born land near Smallville, with Superboy figuring out how to carry out his father's last few recorded wishes.

Viva Adventure Sunday!

Was the Earth-1 Aquaman this insanely accommodating to his friends? Maybe THAT"S the defining line for the Earth1-2 switchover. You'd never see Green Arrow joing the navy.
