"What? Vibe is getting his own series? I care not!"

I sense a meme coming on...

"Air-breathers"? "I care not"? Please. No way is that real. Someone took a Namor word balloon and pasted it over an Aquaman panel. That's what I choose to believe. Is it true? I care not!

I think "I care not" was Bob Haney's response to when a DC editor said "Bob, these characters are not acting like they normally act."

Ah, this is a Haney script. That explains it. I loved it when Haney had the otherwise cool-as-cucumbers characters go off, like when Batman exclaimed he was going to hunt down the Joker and kill him like the dog he was, etc.

Or like when Batman would go to the grocery store in full costume.

As if a DC editor would ever have said that to him, Rob! They cared not! ;-D

I think the world of Bob Haney. He was a great guy with a wide-ranging mind. He wrote at least two of my all-time favorite stories. And also, it's literally true to say he really didn't care if characters in his stories weren't consistent with the way they acted in other people's stories. The notion of worrying about that would have seemed ridiculous to him. Haney didn't love comics; he had fun writing them and getting paid for them, and saw his job as writing a yarn some kid would pay a dime or quarter for...not contributing to a grand tapestry of continuity that would be pondered decades later.

I gotta say, that attitude seems more appealing now that we have Marvel and DC messing with good books to satisfy line-wide "events" and leaving most creators no creative freedom. Marvel Now? The New 52? I care not!
