Splash Page Saturday: Adventure Comics #209

sg
This is the splash page to Adventure Comics #209, which we recapped last week for Adventure Sunday. It's by Ramona Fradon, and it is one of my single favorite images she's ever created--and that's saying something.

The design and placement of the elements here are so wonderfully dramatic and fluid--I can practically feel the spray of the harsh ocean waves as they spatter explorer George Rogers on his mad quest to find a missing island. Also: that guy in the bottom left, who can barely be seen through the wind and rain.

It was fairly unusual to have a splash image (I call it that because it didn't take up a full page--since these Golden Age Aquaman stories were only six pages long, so every inch counted) that didn't feature the hero in question, but of course here it works flawlessly.

Good timing for this splash page -- from this week's headlines: http://www.todaysthv.com/news/watercooler/235507/70/Island-in-the-Pacific-disappears
