Cover to Cover: Adventure Comics #491

sgsg
We haven't done an installment of Cover to Cover and a while, but this is a perfect example of a comics cover that features the Sea King in a prominent way.

With this issue of the series, Adventure Comics got switched to a digest format, and featured almost exclusively reprint material. Aquaman, who seemed to return to the title every year or so, was given a slot. Starting with this issue the classic "Search for Mera" by Steve Skeates and Jim Aparo was reprinted in full--unbelievably, still the only time that storyline has been reprinted/collected in any form!

To represent all the strips inside, new covers were commissioned, in this case by Keith Giffen (who would later write Aquaman) and Romeo Tanghal. Since we've already covered Aquaman #40, there's no need to go over it again here. But I thought the cover was so spiffy it deserved some attention. More to come!

Nice! Although I'd have had him in the top corner instead of Cptn Marvel. The place where he is located (along with Black Canary, Spectre and Sandman) gives the impression of a second-tier JLer.
