These are photos from an art project called The Impersonators, by photographer Nicolas Silberfaden. As you can see from his site, the point of The Impersonators was to take real-life professional cosplayers working in and around Los Angeles and have them pose in a way that reflects their current financial situation, which as you can imagine is not great.
Of all the icons portrayed (Superman, Snow White, Indiana Jones, Catwoman, etc.), I'd say Aquaman looks the least sad--maybe it's the Brave and the Bold-esque beard.
This was sent in by two different F.O.A.M.ers--Richard Bensam was first, followed shortly thereafter by Robert Watkins, who sent in the link to Silberfaden's website. Thanks guys!
"a somber, striking visual image that contradicts the iconic nature of strength and moral righteousness typical in American superhero and celebrity imagery." Sorry, I know art is in the eye of the beholder, but I feel like this totally misses. The portraits aren't very thought provoking, anyone who knows cos players some just look like a lot we see at cons etc. Don't like being negative, but the thought was a good one, but the product is a fail...IMHO
