Splash Pages: Wonder Woman #291

sg
Today is another installment of Splash Pages, where we feature a particularly captivating intro featuring Aquaman...or in this case, Mera!

This splash from from Wonder Woman #291 is significant for two reasons: one, it's just a really cool opening shot, by Gene Colan and Frank McLaughlin, of Diana and DC's other superheroines. Two, if you can believe it, this represents Mera's only appearance during the entire run of Wonder Woman's first book, which ran 329 issues! She's not even featured in this multi-issue storyline, which featured Wonder Woman teaming up with some of the others you see pictured. Nope, Mera showed up for the class photo, then quickly went back to Atlantis. What a lost opportunity!

Still, it's a great splash page. Gene Colan did everything well!

I love Wonder Woman, but she sucks at being THE woman hero. She's terribly unsupportive. She barely has relationships with her own "sidekicks," much less fellow heroines. It only took until 1982 to attempt this sort of all girl hullabaloo, and they didn't have another until (I think) Phil Jimenez's run in the early 2000s.

See now here I'm going to ruffle some feathers. I love Gene Colan on moody stuff like Tomb of Dracula...but I never cared for his super hero work at all. Far too ethereal and ...well...sloppy. I'm sure Colan as an inker's nightmare. I liked his Batman to a point, but that was it.

Loved him on TOD, though!

I agree with Earth 2 Chris.... NEVER liked Gene Colan. He was one of the few artists I would *never* pick up. After he took over TEC and WW I read those but hated them. Look at Supergirl's cape...it looks like it was made o that action figure plastic. Loook at Madame Xanadau's feet...why aren't they flat on the ground?! Sorry, but...no.

IIRC, Batgirl didn't appear in that story either. She must have been needed for a Congressional vote.

Also no Hawkwoman/girl. Really, Diana's closest JLA girl-friends and none of them were front and center!?!?! Dumb.
