DC Poster by Jose Luis Garcia Lopez - 1979

sg
The master artist Jose Luis Garcia Lopez (Praise Be His Name) posted this over on his Facebook page a few weeks ago, the original art to a heretofore unseen poster he was commissioned to do in 1979 (despite the "1981" written at the bottom).

The poster was inked by Dick Giordano, and if you click to embiggen you can see it features all of the big DC stars of the time, with an emphasis on the Legion of Superheroes, who were pretty big then. Aquaman is kinda tucked away in the back there, but he's doing his best to catch up!

I had never seen this poster before, and Jose doesn't mention what is was for. Anyone ever have a copy of it?

Maybe Arthur's a little behind because he's "out of his element" so to speak... ;^)

Great poster! Is that Baron Winter down there, on Sarge's right? He might be placed a little behind Aquaman if this poster had been made recently. At least this piece of art gave him a moment in the sun and a chance to rub shoulders with the biggest and brightest.

Aquaman is keeping pace with Ultra Boy of the LSH. He's in the same power caliber as Superboy and Mon-El, so I'd say Arthur is doing just fine.

Baron Winter didn't come around until about 1982 or 1983. My guess is that guy next to Rock is Enemy Ace.

Hey, there's that gay dude way up front! How progressive of DC!

My completely uneducated (know nothing) guess would be that it is maybe, perhaps the first draft of THIS piece?

A lot of the same characters seem to be running around in both works.

@Randy--yes! Now I can see it; the insignias on that collar tab or whatever it is, and that thing he's holding, whatever it may be. I didn't recognize the Hammer without his headgear.

I've never seen this before, but it's fantastic. Another great piece of art from a master of the form, with Aquaman present and correct.

Hmm. I worked on the DC Style Guide circa 1979 and I don't remember this artwork being in the book. That doesn't mean it wasn't included later. It may have been for a separate project, although I have no memory of what that might have been. The whole of the Style Guide at that time was penciled by Jose and inked by Dick.

Aquaman shows up in the Style Guide I have in my possession, but he's usually drawn rather small scale. He's prominent on the back cover, however, so I shouldn't complain. (I'll send you some pics, Rob.)

I was surprised by the lead of the Justice Society, to tell you the truth. By 1979 they were out of their book and IIRC hanging out in ADVENTURE? Pretty good placement for a bunch of "has-beens," haha!

And of course, no Hawkwoman or Captain Marvel, Jr. And is the Atom squeezed in there somewhere? Shrinking Violet made it, but not Ray Palmer? Craaaaazy!!!
