Super Powers Concept Art

sg
Hot on the heels of our Super Powers Collection-centric episode of The Fire and Water Podcast, F.O.A.M. member extraordinaire Ray DeForest sent in this uber-rare piece of Kenner SP concept art, featuring some Aquaman accessories!

"Aquaman accessories", you say? What "Aquaman accessories"? Exactly! As cool as it is just seeing this piece, it raises all sorts of questions. As far as we know, the Aquaman figure was never considered for a repaint or deluxe version, so why was Kenner prepping scuba gear accessories (pieces that, of course, Aquaman wouldn't need in the first place)? I smell a mystery!

Thanks Ray!

Were these meant to be action figure accessories? Kenner likely knew their source material well enough to avoid such a mistake. But they did do the Superman child-sized cape promo, so maybe they're part of a role play line which never materialized.

I suspect this was one of the first seeds to the New 52! Im 100% sure that Dan Didio worked at Kenner in the '80s under a different name. These Aquaman accessories are proof that he and his Merry Men were thinking that far ahead.

Or, y'know, Occam's razor. They were probably proposing to produce actual swimming pool scuba gear for kids, like the Super Powers branded sunglasses.

I thought like Frank, these were Aqua-tie-in items for kids to wear.

THX for posting this! I bought this on eBay a few weeks ago. It was talked about in "Tomart ACTION FIGURE DIGEST Toy Magazine # 114". I found a copy in the UK and it is on it's way! When I get it I will let everyone know what it says about this. It was definitely for the "Super Powers" collection. Love a little mystery! More to come...
