Justice League of America #223 - Feb. 1984. Cover art by Chuck Patton and Dick Giordano.
This was the final chapter of an unusually-violent JLA story, with our heroes having to be a bit more ruthless if they wanted to defeat the bad guys. Aquaman, in particular, gets a really tough, bad-ass moment!

Definite bad-ass moment! Why didn't they keep up this facet of his power more?
"Only talk to fish? Let me show you what "only" means to Aquaman."
Yeah, I remember that story. Very gory as you mentioned. Which also seems to be the way a lot of the new books are going...
Reminds me of the old commercial: "This is your brain. (holds up egg). This is your brain after Aquaman gets hold of it (smashes egg with frying pan).
I like this cover; Ralph especially comes off well. Fighting on a mountain top is always a win.
This is one of my favorite JLA stories. And the Aquaman moment is definitely a great one.
