Super Deformed Superhero Set

sg
F.O.A.M. member Carl Stresing sent me pics of an eBay auction that was selling this packaged set of Japanese figurines, also known as "Super Deformed" figures, presumably because of their giant heads and...unusual poses and facial contortions.

The Aquaman figure that's part of this set and I have a sort of history. As I reported on the Shrine way, way back in 2006, I own this little monstrosity, having bought it at the very first San Diego Comic Con I attended in 1998.

With its unsettling feminine mouth, this thing deeply disturbed every one of my friends who was at the SDCC with me. So I made sure to plant it on the bureau in our hotel room, and there it sat for the duration of the trip. My pal Sean Tiffany seemed particularly unnerved, which I enjoyed immensely.

Of the six in the set, I'd say The Flash figure is just as weird as Aquaman. Green Lantern and Venom look okay, Catwoman sorta okay, and Wolverine just looks perturbed. But then that's normal for him.

I assume these are bootlegs, because DC and Marvel don't allow their characters to be intermingled. In addition, I love the oddly patriotic packaging!

Thanks Carl!

I've had a pair of these Aquaman figures for many years and did not know their origin. Thanks for that, Rob!

I don't...I can't...is he expressing horror at being served a crab dinner?

Green Lantern has a knife! That's NOT normal!

I think that's why these are so odd, they are doing some truly out of character things. I think Robin has an opera mask for some reason...

Oddly, I have this sitting amongst my Aqua-Shrine, as well. May be the oddest piece there!

I have the Aquaman figure in my collection, sans the golden springs at the bottom. He takes pride and place amongst my many Aquaman figures.

I've got those...my buddy in Houston got them for me and they weren't exactly cheap, though we traded.
