Just Imagine! The New DCU

sg
Based on Shrine Correspodent Joe Slab's Guest Post yesterday about DC's upcoming, universe-wide relaunch, I thought we'd continue the fun a little bit with a flight of fancy inspired by (read: ripped-off from) a post over on Siskoid's Blog of Geekery.

There, Siskoid asked readers to come up with their dream writer/artist/character match-ups, the kind of combos you could only imagine if DC decided to just rip everything up and start anew (which is, from what I've seen, about 50% of what they're doing this September). I offered a handful of suggestions in the comments, like these:

Challengers of the Unknown by Mark Evanier and Steve Rude
The Demon by Paul Pope
The Inferior Five by Evan Dorkin
Johnny Double by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips
The Legion of Superheroes by Los. Bros. Hernandez
Plastic Man by Mike Allred
Shade the Changing Man by Daniel Clowes
Slam Bradley
by Darwyn Cooke
Supergirl by Jessica Abel
Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen by Mitch O'Connell
Ultra the Multi Alien by Scott Morse
The Unknown Soldier by Joe Sacco
sg
So I thought it'd be fun to ask all of you, what dream teams would you like to see? Let your imaginations really run wild--you can suggest any writer/artist/character combo that you think would be really, really, really cool. Also--don't be limited by as-yet-unspoken-for characters: if you think you have a better combo for, say, Green Lantern (or Batgirl, or Superman, or even Aquaman!) than DC has scheduled, let's see that, too!

The only stipulation is: the creators have to be living. Sure, it'd be awesome to have Jack Cole back on Plastic Man or Will Eisner on Batman--but unless DC is planning something really extraordinary, let's try and keep the suggestions to what is literally possible. Who knows? Maybe someone at DC will see this and say "Hey, that's not a bad idea..."

The Shrine will post some of the most inspired combos later in the week. Until then, have fun!

I have never cared for Mike Allred but I can understand why you would like to see him on Plastic Man.

Aquaman by Mark Waid and J.H. Williams III - as Gail Simone said, "Mark Waid doesn't know how to write a bad comic"; couple that with the mind-blowing crazy stuff J.H. could design and construct for an undersea environment.

All-Star Justice Society of America by Darwyn Cooke - essentially, everything he did in "The New Frontier" with the Golden Age characters, set in the '30s/'40s.

Martian Manhunter by Ed Brubaker and Jock. Noir style action with Jock's stylized pencils and color pallet.

This isn't DC but I want this sooo bad...
Fantastic Four 12-issue series by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely.

Batman and Robin by David Mazzucchelli (art) and Dave Gibbons (writing)
John Jones: Manhunter from Mars by Max Allan Collins (writing) and D'Israeli (art)
Hawkman by Mike Baron (writer) and Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez (art)
Green Lantern by Mike Baron (writer) and Ty Templeton (art)
Adam Strange by Mike Baron (writer) and Gary Giani (art)

I've been thinking about this all day and I'm going with All-Star Aquaman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely!

Same team as All-Star Superman(where Superman and Lois were depicted going on a date in Atlantis)and both of them have done justice to the Sea King before. If they could distill the essence and majesty of Aquaman in the way they did Superman, I could read it and be done with comics forever ;)

Sugar and Spike by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland.

@Ryan--Aquaman drawn by JH Williams would be visually AMAZING.

@Ghost--I think there's a better chance of Will Eisner doing Batman than Alan Moore writing for DC again!

Peter Milligan and Mike Allred (X-Statix) reunited on an ultra-weird L.E.G.I.O.N. They could make Vril Dox and his band of misfits a real force in the DCU.

Off the top of my head ...

Superman: Brian K. Vaughn and Sami Basri

Action Comics: Grant Morrison, Mark Waid with art by Rags Morales

Batman: Scott Snyder and Jock

Detective Comics: Duane
Swierczynski and Francesco Fracavilla

Wonder Woman: Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner

Aquaman: Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis

Flash: Joshua Dysart and Mark Bagley

Martian Manhunter: Paul Cornell and Gabriel Hardman

Green Lantern: Geoff Johns and C.A.F.U

Justice League: Geoff Johns and Jim Lee

Lois Lane and the Daily Planet: Greg Rucka and Gail Simone with art by Darwyn Cooke and Chris Samnee

Batgirl: Gail Simone and Nicola Scott

Birds of Prey: Marjorie Liu and Jesus Saiz

@Matt: Love the Lois Lane idea!

@Doug: Don't know much about the LEGION (anything, really), but that's a cool creative team!

@Matt: I love Jesus Saiz; he's the one thing I'm looking forward to about the new Birds of Prey which really worries me.

I love Ivan Reis and I'm glad that someone with his talent and style is sticking with Johns to work on Aquaman. But if he had to do another book, I would want Reis on Justice League with Johns more than Jim Lee.

@ rob! & Ryan-

I'm not sure if I'm up for an albino Sea King that gets mistaken for a mime drawn by J.H. Williams! LOL

Fun idea.

Mark Waid and Chris Samnee on Aquaman.
Geoff Johns and Amanda Connor on Mera.
Alan Heinberg and Jim Cheung on Teen Titans.
Ed Bubaker and Marcos Martin on Nightwing.
Grant Morrison and Cliff Chiang on Big Barda and Mister Miracle.
Dan Slott and Eric Canete on Plastic Man.
Gail Simone and Marcus To on Batman Family.
Matt Fraction and Stewart Immonen on JLA.

One I long-dreamed about but can never be:
Mark Waid and Mike Wieringo on Aquaman.

And one of mine that has broader scope and occasionally happens:
Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely on anything.

Aquaman by Frank Miller!

Count Drunkula said...

@David J. Cutler: Slott on Plastic Man would be awesome!

I ditto Jim Cheung on TEEN TITANS, but I would hope it would be the original or even New Teen Titans rather than whatever we have now. He would be awesome on YOUNG JUSTICE, too, I guess.

Also would want Amanda Conner on something...maybe STARGIRL or LIBERTY BELLE or HUNTRESS (get this character into the JSA!!)

I also ditto Jesus Saiz on BIRDS OF PREY... I may have to pick that up.

David J. Cutler said...

@Russel--my ideal Titan teams for Heinberg and Cheung would be Tim Drake Red Robin or Robin, Superboy, Wonder Girl, Bart Allen Kid Flash, Jackson Hyde Aqualad, Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle, and Natasha Irons (Steel's neice, sort of re-imagined as a junior Cyborg sidekick). Frequent guest appearances from Damian Wayne, Miss Martian, Static Shock and Supergirl, others as well I'm sure. I'd buy like 5 of these a month.

I also really like the original 5 line up, but for a modern, in-continuity team, these would be my guys (in their best costumes, rather than... well).

Well, I'd love to see a Mera mini-series drawn by JH Williams II and written by Jill Thompson (Beasts of Burden).

Now...
Aquaman...I'd like Patrick Gleason to come back, but since that's something we've already seen that how about rotating some artists... I think The Trench storyline would look great with Eduardo Risso. Chris Samnee or Evan Shaner on some of the brighter books. But I'd like Rick Remender (Recent Punisher/Franken-Castle run and currently on Uncanny X-Force) for writing duties.

Other books:
Batman & Robin: Grant Morrison and Patrick Gleason
Justice League Dark: James Robinson and Peter Snejbjerg
JSA: Howard Chaykin and Darwyn Cooke
Checkmate: Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso
Swamp Thing by Mike Mignola and Francesco Francavilla
Batman by Ryan Sook or Duncan Fegredo
Teen Titans by Paul Pope
Detective Comics by Scott Snyder and Jock (how about keeping that going...really...)
