"Strength In Numbers" - 1996

A couple weeks ago the Shrine posted a library bookmark whose artwork was taken from a larger, limited edition print by Jerry Ordway and Karl Kesel that was sold through the late, great WB Studio Stores.

Thanks to F.O.A.M.er Daria, we now can see the whole piece (click to see a bigger version) and see all sixty(!) characters they managed to cram in there. And like an actor that knows where to stand so the camera always has a clear shot of them, Aquaman knew to pose near Superman, since that's where most of the attention would be focused.

Can you name them all?

Thanks Daria!

I have this picture as a 1000 piece puzzle.

Oh wow Ian. I bet that is very cool as a puzzle. I miss the WB stores.

If the winged guy on the right is Zauriel I'd think this was from late 1997 or 98, as the character didn't exist in 96. I have no idea why that should matter, but just to be as big a nerd as possible :P

I have the puzzle, too. Built it once. Maybe do that again next Winter. And if they did this now, you KNOW Mera would be right next to her hubby!

Well, of course, I bought this because they included Tempest and the other original Titans, save Donna; I'm pretty sure that it is the only official WB issue of this kind which does. They barely crammed in Roy Harper next to him (rather than placing him with Dinah and Connor); Ollie was "comic book dead" at the time, of course. I also loved that Garth was paired with the one fellow hero who could drive even the ever-patient Garth to violence: Bart!

Is patience one of Garth's characteristics? Adult Garth has always seemed so angry to me.

Adult Garth had a lot to be angry about, unfortunately; he had to eat a lot of rage, while the younger version was happy just being given something to punch. By the time he became Tempest, he'd learned to control his anger, which was important once he'd become both a government official and an ambassador. Besides, once he'd learned that he could freeze or boil someone's blood with just a thought, he seemed to learn to pull his punches.

As for the Ordway artwork, the only character I can't name is the guy standing to the left of Starman. Is that Jack's brother?

David J. Cutler said...

Do you mean Starman's left, our right? If so, that's Hitman.

Oh wow--thanks, David. I hadn't seen your post before. NOW I can name them all!
