Alex Ross' Oceanman

sg
This is another selection from the superb Alex Ross: Mythology book, this time featuring Li'l Ross' redesigns of various DC heroes.

You can see the influence of George Perez on these pieces, in both the art style and design. Which makes sense, since Ross grew up in the 70s and 80s, when Perez was the preeminent superhero artist at both DC and Marvel.

The book doesn't specify what year these were done, but it was after 1985's Crisis on Infinite Earths, involving Ross' childhood plan for a whole new universe of DC heroes. I feel there's a bit of Craig Hamilton's influence on Oceanman as well (especially the logo), so I'd guess these are late 1986 or later.
Oceanman's costume is a tad ornate, but still pretty spiffy!

I've mentioned the Mythology book before; its a really exceptional tome. The big deluxe hardcover edition is OOP, but there's a softcover version still available. The Shrine recommends it to any Ross and/or comic art fan:

So an amazing book! Even if OOP well worth the time to snag on Ebay or Amazon!

Great art even at that young age. I also love the new header to the site.
