Aquaman (Vol.7) #3 - April 2003

sg
Comics Weekend "Aquamancer!" by Rick Veitch, Yvel Guichet, and Mark Propst.

In the first two issues of this new Aquaman series, we've heard mentions of what's going on with Mera, but now we get to see for ourselves:

So while his old and trusted friend Rodunn plans on revenge, Aquaman is on land, adjusting to his new abilities and situation. Sweeney shows up at the lighthouse again, and Arthur asks her if she wouldn't mind giving him a haircut and shave (once a king, always a king).

Sweeney's answer is, essentially, "do it your own damn self", so he does:

On their way back from town, Arthur and Sweeney see an injured man lying by the side of the road. More than injured, actually: the guy's a bloody mess, covered in bite marks!

Sweeney takes the man to the hospital, leaving Aquaman to investigate. While doing so, he is sucker-punched by Rodunn. They fight for a few moments, Aquaman using his new magical powers to defend himself. But Rodunn has a few tricks up his sleeve as well: a giant lamprey that grabs Aquaman and tosses him around like a rag doll!

It spits Aquaman out, tossing him miles into the air, leaving him almost naked. Having a moment to regroup, Aquaman follows a vision given to him the Lady of the Lake, and heads into a small grotto into a place called The Secret Sea. Its there he meets up with her while Rodunn waits above:

Rodunn is startled to see his former ruler now fully healed from the attack by the lamprey, insisting Aquaman is working with dark magic. Not paying attention, he walks right into the path of the lamprey, still hungry!

It swallows Rodunn, and of course Aquaman is compelled to help. He frees Rodunn, and uses his waterbearer abilities to heal him as well. Rodunn has a change of heart, seeing Aquaman is not the traitor he thought he was. He begs forgiveness, which Aquaman grants. He also asks Rodunn for something: his pants!

Later, Sweeney returns, looking for Aquaman where she left him. She runs into Rodunn, who sort of babbles something about the King of Atlantis, and then takes off--in the nude. Sweeney, now realizing this blond guy might be who he says he is, finally finds who she's looking for:

...to be continued!

Another fun issue, and of course I was glad to see Aquaman lose the barbarian look he had for almost a decade.

There was a lot to like in this reboot, I'm still not sure why (beyond the water hand and non-classic costume) it didn't click for me.
