Saturday Morning Line-Up - 10/20/67

sg
I recently signed up for an account at NewspaperArchive.com, a really cool, invaluable resource for finding obscure references in hundreds of years' worth of newspapers.

You can search by subject, so of course "Aquaman" was one of the first things I plugged in. I got a ton of hits, but very few of them are anything other than TV listings. I waded through a couple of them, and was really struck by this one, from the 10/20/67 edition of the Maryland News: check out that Saturday morning line-up!

In addition to the Filmation Superman and Aquaman shows, you've got Spider-Man, Space Ghost, Atom Ant, The Beatles, King Kong, Jonny Quest, George of the Jungle, and more--all back-to-back-to-back!

This gave me warm, fuzzy memories of the similarly awesome line-up one of my local Philly stations, Channel 48, had going when I was a kid. Man, that was back when the phrase "Saturday Morning" really meant something...

Gosh! Did American kids ever leave the house on such mornings? On this side of the pond and at that time, there was nothing like such a line-up.

I notice you didn't mention "Shazzan!" Is that because of your love/hate relationship with Capt. Marvel, or because it's not a typo and thus not who we all think it is? :)

Never mind... :)

So Space Ghost and Birdman were on different channels? Huh. I'm trying to figure out how this worked: I always watched Birdman (and the Galaxy Trio!) and of course Superman/Aquaman, which would have meant changing the channel…and The Beatles, which would have meant changing the channel yet again. In fact, based on these listings and my recollections of what I watched, I would have needed to change channels every half hour! So much for network loyalty…

(Yes, I lived in Pennsylvania rather than Maryland, but the CBS/NBC/ABC lineups would have been the same regardless.)

I was there, too (touched on in my HEY, KIDS! piece,)

It was very cool.

Haaaa--I had no network loyalty most of the time, though I remember watching a lot of ABC Saturday morning line-ups. Still, I never missed Aquaman, either in the 1 hour time slot or the later 30 minute version. I remember how excited I'd get when I saw those four stars and knew it would be a Teen Titans cartoon filler; those were the best! I miss those days when we watched cartoons all morning and American Bandstand in the afternoon.
