JLA Satellite Plate by Alex Ross

sg
While I was doing an image search for yesterday's Alex Ross "Christmas with the JLA" collector's plate, I remembered another one in the series the Shrine had not yet covered--this shot of the JLA aboard their outer space satellite, 22,300 miles above Earth!

Its kind of amazing how much action Ross can infer with his work--after all, the JLA is just sitting around, but the different attitudes and poses of everyone makes the thing crackle with excitement--you feel like something big is breaking, or is about to.

Since this shot has more limited space than some of the others, Ross had to leave a couple of his favorites out--Hawkgirl, Zatanna, and Captain Marvel. Luckily for us, another favorite of Ross' is Aquaman, who sort of draws focus because he's clearly talking as this "shot" was taken (Ross again leaves out Firestorm--if I was a big Firestorm fan, I would think about starting a "My Grudge Against Alex Ross" feature, but that's just me).

I wonder who Superman and Wonder Woman are looking at?

I'm glad the Atom made the cut for this one.

And wow -- of every pose in the picture, Aquaman definitely steals the show. He probably knew that picture was being taken, but he just had to finish making his point.

My guess is Supes and WW are looking at Captain Marvel and saying "Did Ross let you in AGAIN?"

Yeah, maybe they are looking at Marvel and wondering who the hell invited him?

I hope they're looking at Snapper Carr and saying "Welcome back!"

Dude! Superman and Wonder Woman are looking at Firestorm! Here's my theory: All renditions of the JLA by Alex Ross are taken from Firestorm's point of view. This accounts for his seeming absence, and also explains the source of light used for the portraits.

or,

Maybe they're all gathered together to conduct job interviews for janitorial staff.

I'm glad people at least managed to contain complaining about Ross' JLA lineup for the Christmas plate, anyway.

For a little while, at least.

Always a fan of the Atoms mini-chair :D

As for who the stern folks are staring at, Amanda Waller?

It is obvious that Superman and Wonder Woman are looking at the JLA's newest member. Me. Or you. Whoever is holding the plate.
