More Fun Comics #98 - July 1944

sg
Comics Weekend "Treasure of the Deep!" by Joe Samachson and Louis Cazeneuve.

More fun with More Fun!

Before we get to this week's adventure: if Green Arrow and Speedy knew what was coming--humor characters Dover and Clover and their ilk would eventually push every superhero feature out of More Fun Comics--I don't think they would've been nearly as welcoming.

Okay, anyway, this issue's story opens with a more traditional Aquaman-type adventure--a hunt for treasure!:

Sponsler's Dick Tracy villain-esque assistant is confused, since his boss, this time, seems to operating on the up-and-up. After Blodgett leaves, Sponsler lets Baldy know that, don't worry, he has a plan.

Weeks later, a factory is refitted and put to work, using Blodgett's remarkable invention. It sits on the waterfront, and that Sovereign of the Seas, Aquaman, notices what's going on.

He's skeptical the machine really can do what it promises, and goes back later at night--only to see what looks like a gang of crooks stealing from the factory!

Aquaman goes to search for the rest of the gold, and finds some more of it. He then returns it to Sponsler. When he asks where Blodgett is, they tell him he's out sick.

Aquaman, still suspicious, takes a tour of the place, and spots Blodgett's suit hanging nearby. He begins to look into another room when Baldy tries to stop him. Aquaman hits baldy right in the...lower stomach, and then finds his suspicions confirmed--Blodgett is inside, unconscious!:

...Aquaman, friend to kooky inventors everywhere!

This is one of Aquaman's more low-key adventures: not bad in any way, but there's nothing terribly unusual or memorable either, except maybe for Sponsler's odd henchman Baldy, who really gets it in this one panel from Aquaman:
sg
...don't ever ask Baldy "Didn't you used to be right-handed?"

One feels Green Arrow and Speedy have long since had their vengeance on Dover and Clover.

Imagine what O'Neil and Adams could've done with that!

Just watch, now that you've mentioned this, Johns or Robinson brings them back. As undead villains!
