Neal Adams Likes Aquaman

sg
F.O.A.M. member Ed Catto caught this interesting mention of Aquaman over on Neal Adams' site. Accompanying the above piece of artwork, this is what the legendary Mr. Adams had to say:

I like Aquaman.

You don’t?

I do.

I did, ever since Ramona Fradon drew it and lights like Alan Davis, John Byrne and others were inspired to love and draw comics.

All he's ever needed was…hmmm…to be…oh, 6'3". To have the densest muscles of anyone on Earth…to swim like a powerboat with a costume that turns him into a creature OF the sea…and what he's always had…the ability to command any creature of the sea of the sea to "to drive RIGHT UP YOUR…imagination."

Aquaman…rocks.

Wow! You don't get much more of a full-throated endorsement than that!

You can find the original post here, although the way the site is constructed you have to scroll down a bit to find the Dec. 4, 2009 entry.

Adams doesn't mention what the above piece of artwork is from, and I don't recognize it at all. Anyone have any idea if this story (if, indeed, it is an entire story)--featuring an unusual-looking Aquaman--ever saw print anywhere?

Also...I knew that Alan Davis was/is a big Aquaman fan, but John Byrne? I never heard that Byrne was a particular Aqua-fan. Good to know!

Good catch, Ed, and thanks!

Very cool, but I'd pass on that sea creature transformy costume.

I believe it's from a new Batman project that Neal is working on. I'm not so wild about that look for Aquaman, either, but it's still cool that the character is apparently going to get a big spotlight in it.

That's the project that Frank Miller is writing with Adams. I'm excited for new Adams Batman, but less excited about his Batman carrying a gun, and not excited at all about Miller writing it.

Aquaman's new suit looks a bit over-designed, but hey, at least he doesn't have a hook!

Interesting. The suit is a bit much. And does Batman plan on keeping that finger? Cause too much of that and Aquaman will be feeding it to Storm.

I remember reading a Comics Journal interview with Neal Adams back in the late 70s or early 80s and he said quite clearly then that he liked Aquaman. I kept a copy of that interview for years.

Neal posted that on his facebook page along with a link to a cgi video. Tommy (Bat blog) might have also posted it there as well. I don't care for the new design either, but once it's in color it might look more appealing.

Not only do I not care for the costume, I HATE that Brock Samson haircut. Being king of the Sea does not mean you have a mullet.

I also remember reading somewhere that Neal Adams dug Aquaman.

Regarding the new design... Not sure on the gloves. I have always liked Aquaman with long hair, circa Aparo rather than the hook days. I'm not liking the shoulder thingies though. Too much like Radiation Roy or those frilly Ren Faire collars. That's a definite no-no.

A new Batman story drawn by Neal Adams and written by Frank Miller? I guess it'll feature the line "Because I'm the Goddamn Batman, Arthur."

Yeah, I'm not too keen on Aquaman's look here, but its just one panel of a story, so I'm withholding judgment.

I'm glad Aquaman's involved--he's one of the few DC characters to neither appear (or even be mentioned) in either of the Dark Knight books--I always guessed Miller had no real interest in him.

Consider yourself lucky! Look what he did to Dick Grayson! sheesh.
