Aqualad Trading Card - 1991

sgThis is an Aqualad trading card from the 1991 DC Stars series (I posted other cards from this series here).

I believe the art is by Ken Hooper, who was
drawing the Aquaman series at the time. Its a nice piece, well colored, too, but whose idea was that big gray border? It really deadens the whole thing.

Yeah, those cards have a deadly dull design. They have some fantastic artwork on those cards, but its definitely marred by the design.

The only weird thing about this set is Skybox didn't have the rights to any Batman characters at the time (Topps had them), so there is a huge hole in the DCU!

I have a full set of these. And yes, the art was nice but the design was terrible.

I guess I'm in the minority, then, when I say that compared to some of the more outlandish cards that came later, I kind of like these.

And yes, the lack of Bat characters is pretty striking.
