I'm assuming that if all their portfolios have been marked down to a measly 50 cents each, Target is trying to move them out the door to make room for new merchandise--maybe even some new, DC hero-themed stuff? Once can hope...
On a side note: as a kid, if I had brought something like the above to school, I would have been teased mercilessly (and was, he says, slightly bitterly).
I wonder if those of you who have kids who are currently in grade school can answer this--is this still true? Or has the proliferation of comic book superheroes in the culture (movies, games, TV shows, etc.) made this kind of stuff cool for kids to be seen with among their peers?

Oh, I wish there was a Target nearby for the portfolio looks different than the one I found at the local Wal-Mart Super Center. Same characters but different poses.
I was in elementary and junior high school in the end of the 80s-early 1990s, and while by the 7th grade the girls would certainly make fun of you for superhero school gear, it was the in thing with the guys until 95 or so.
My youngest two are 13 and 11, and I don't think either of them would be bugged at having super-hero themed merchandise for school supplies.
In fact, my daughter, the 13-year-old, would probably prefer it! She has mad love for Wolverine at the moment, and the same for Batman. She would totally take that portfolio to school, without a doubt.
My students are the ones who told me about the folders at Target, and in fact, most of them had already purchased them.
They don't get teased about them, and it earns points for me because I get them too.
There are quite a few teacher materials that focus on superheroes as well. Right now, I have a Batman "READ" poster done by Alex Ross hanging in my classroom. I believe that there is also a group shot poster of the DC heroes with the same theme.
I would have been picked on mercilessly when I was in school, but such things are passe now, and superheroes are "cool."
For me as a kid, I was okay with the Super Hero stuff until about 5th or 6th grade, then I started to get the snickers. I then read my comics in secret and hid my shame until I was a sophomore in high school, when I decided I just didn't give a crap what people thought of me based on that.
The stigma seems to have died here. I see kids of all school ages with comic-related T-shirts on. My 7-year old son carries a Superman lunch box that looks like his chest, it even has a cape! He wears a super hero (or similar) T-shirt just about every day.

My daughter will be a senior in high school this year, and she has this folder along with the Wonder Woman notebook. One of her friends has another one (probably the one Jamdin is talking about) and we went to Wal-Mart to find it, but they were out.
Although I didn't buy any, there were also quite a few MARVEL heroes stuff at Target. The kids *must* be buying the super-heroes along with the animals, Jonas Bros, High School Musical, and Tinker Bell stuff.
I bought them when I found them at our Target, Rob if you want scans...just ask.
