Child World Ad - 1974

sg
I shamelessly stole this ad from my friend Brian's blog Plaid Stallions--when I saw the appearance of Aquaman (albeit a tiny, tiny one!) I had to post it here.

I think if I had a time machine, I would go back in time to September 2, 1974, and while all the kids were mobbing Snoopy, I would scoop up ever MIB Mego Aquaman, Superman, Batman, and Robin I could.

Then I would return to this time, sell the impossible-to-find-in-mint Megos (keeping one Aquaman for myself), and Tracy and I could finally get that dream house we've always wanted (with a hammock out back for me).

Stealer! "Shakes Fist"

I'd clothes shopping in 1974 and apply for a job in Mego R&d...

I'd ask you to pick up some Planet of the Apes dolls for me, too. I had Cornelius and The General (don't remember his name) and played with the Super Friends with them. Cornelius was the friendly ape-man, but the General was on the same side as The Joker, The Penguin, and Mr. Mxyzptlk. Ah, good times....

But you really should have posted this on September 1, eh?

Why not sell the time machine technology and build your dream house...

Kidding, I said the same thing as you, but I just wanted the toys MIB.

@ Brian, clothes shopping, pure genius! LOL

I like how the ad calls them Planet of the Apes "people", just like we used to do as kids. :)

Why not sell the time machine technology and build your dream house...I clearly didn't think my plan through.

Wait--on second thought--If I sold the plans, who knows what nefarious hands they'd fall into? At least, with me, I'd use them relatively trivial purposes, like Mego hoarding.

"Child World
a world of toys!
Great for girls
and great for boys!"

Every year, Child World would sponser the Thanksgiving morning broadcast of March of the Wooden Soldiers on Pix Channel 11.

I think my mom actually bought my Aquaman Mego at the Child World that was on Jericho Turnpike all those years ago!

And Russell, IIRC the General was Urko. He was the one with the funky helmet molded to his head

I've always been sort of thrown off by that Aquaman stock art pose they used for Mego products. It looks like Aquaman just got the football in an olde-timey game,
a la "Leatherheads". "Touchdown, here I come. Twenty-three skidoo!"
(Yeah, I don't know what that means either.)

That is an awkward pose.

Oh, and I believe 23 Skidoo started out as a code between police officers when a breeze blew up a woman's skirt so you could see her underthings.

No, really.
