Aquaman (Vol.1) #56 Original Cover Art

sg
This is the original art for the super-awesome cover to Aquaman (Vol.1) #56, the last issue of the title's original run. (This scan was sent to me by an anonymous donor--thanks, Anonymous!)

It's credited entirely to Nick Cardy, but there's something about that creature that screams Neal Adams to me.

And as I've mentioned before, someone along the line decided to reorient the type, presumably to make it easier to read:

...a great cover, no matter what direction the text is going in!

Yeah...that is definitely one of the all-time great Aquaman covers. Aquaman is so dynamic, and the threat so monumental!

I bet Infantino designed that cover. I think he pretty much designed everyone's covers back then, except Adams. Still Cardy's execution is flawless. Arthur is showing his little known ability to fly (just watch pretty much any Super Friends opening sequence to see what I mean. :-)

I see what you mean on the monster looking like Adams' work. He even somewhat resembles the "Rock God" currently on display at Dial B for Blog!

Considering what was in Aquaman and Detroit's future with the JLA's 'Detroit era' maybe it would have been better if Aquaman had let the creature devour Detroit after all!

Good point Randy. Aquaman and Detroit don't mix. Series gets canceled. Vibe gets created. It's all bad.

Haha, yeah, maybe Aquaman should have let that one go, huh?

You know, the coloring on that creature is very Adams/Continuity Studios...

Dude! This was the first classic Aquaman comic I bought. I bought it solely on how cool I thought the cover looked.

Thanks for the memories!
